Forums - Sony - How Big Can Resistance Get As A Franchise?

Sony is seriously pushing the franchises. The first game practically made the PS3 at launch and has since gone on to sell over 3 million copies Worldwide, and Sony's best selling 1st party title in Others where its outsold the megahit Gears of War.

Now Resistance 2 is set for release and it looks incredible, bigger and better in everyway than the original. But that is not all Resistance Retribution has been announced for the psp and looks to be a standout title. Also Resistance will be recieving both the novel and comic book treatment(sneak peek at both in the CE of Resistance 2). We all know the series will be a trilogy but how monstrous will sale be by then. Who knows maybe a movie is somewhere down the line?

I believe this will become Sony's biggest New IP for the lifetime of the platform(yes bigger than LBP). Whay are your expectations?

I think it can become a huge franchise, think about it insomniac plus an always improving psn the franchise can only go up.

it can get big, kinda depends on R2.if it sell more than the first and settles around 4 - 5 mil. itll be enormous.

well the first one sold 3 million, i'd expect with a much larger userbase, Resistance 2 could sell 3-4 million easily. I think having SOCOM just before it and Killzone 2 right after it may hurt sales slightly, and lets be honest the first one sold so well because it was the only good game on PS3 for a while.

but it is a great game and should sell well. I'd expect a 90% average on metacritic/gamerankings and great sales.

I love Resistance but I hope they don't whore it to death with too many games like the way Ratchet and Clank is going. Having said that, as long as Insomniac are behind it I will have faith that they will always be top notch games.

Pretty big I'd imagine. Nothing at the Halo level, but a core part of the PS catalog for sure.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Based on R1 sales and alot of the reactions to resistance in general I see it being close to doing a syphon filter. What I want it to do is 6 million each for R2 and R3 if possible. A movie would be nice too but i'm not holding out hope for either. Only time will tell.

Resistance is too late to become a huge FPS series. Not to say it won't hav good sales for a few more outings but I see it losing steam after part 2 or 3...and here is why.
- Insomniac does way too many things at the same time to properly dedicate themselves to one franchise
- no one will call resistance 1 revolutionary or 2006 game of the year...first impression can only be made once. (Halo 1, mario, sonic, REsident evil...all were best games the year they came out)
- the FPS genre as a whole I believe peaked in 2007 with Bioshock, Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, Orange Box...

"Resistance 3: modern warfare" is going to be awesome. Just look at what it did to the COD franchise.

If it has a similar hype-machine as H3 did behind it, then everything is possible. Im expecting Ressistance to become later on a cult FPS, but I dont think that its popularity will last more then 2 generations. A trilogy now ( plus a PSP game ) and a fourth final game for the PS3... afther that most games IMO will do significantly worse.
