Forums - Sony - Sony Cuts PlayStation 3 Price by $100, Projects Sales to Double

the 80 gig version is just silly. This is just a ploy that hopefully many people will be stupid and buy the 80 gig version instead of the 60 gig one. They are obviously losing a lot more money on the 60 gig one. The extra 20 gigs costs them what 10$?? Motorstorm doesn't really cost them anything except for the lost revenue if the person would have bought the game anyway.

So its not even a *real* price cut. Its a clearance price on the old model (i.e. temporary), and a free bundled game at the $599 price point (which is already happening in Australia - you can get a game + PS3 for just above the normal RRP).

Sales to double = Sony dreaming. They should (may?) double for the first week or two. Maybe 150k for the month - be shocked if it sells more than this.

What happens when the 60Gig model sells out? Even though that may not happen for a while...

...

Regardless, this gives Sony marketing team something to work off. Expect a huge amount of PS3 advertising  to come soon...

...

(maybe expect a 2nd tier of price cuts around Nov/Xmas - when the 80Gig model + game comes down to $499...).

For the 1000th time, 2.84 million is the only official number which was published by Nintendo on March 31.

It says according to NPD. Not according to Nintendo. Meaning these are NPD numbers at the end of May which should be accurate.

Sorry, my mistake. VGC numbers include Canada too, whereas NPD is US only.

Before people come here saying everyone's being anti-Sony....it is pretty ridiculous to suggest sales doubling...

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

@ckmlb

The PS3 is off to, did you notice that by any chance? PS3 is off by 13%, 360 18% and Wii 25%. And that's vs. current VGChartz America numbers. We don't know what NPD numbers the article mentions, for which month and whether they include Canada. And if you do think it's May NPD, the differences go down to 8% for the PS3, 13% for the Wii and 14% for the 360, which may account for a missing Canada (where the Wii sells even better).

So, what does this all mean? That the Wii is selling well and 4 extra weeks make a big difference, and that the PS3 is selling bad and those 4 weeks mean a lot less.

They also said two days ago that there was no PS3 price cut. Sometimes I don't think Sony execs ever talk with PR or vice-versa.

The numbers cited are from the end of NPD's "May" which runs through June 2 and has Wii at just over 2.8 million in the USA, and 360 at just about 5.6 million through June 2. Vgcharts has 4 more weeks of estimated data for the USA, and makes no distinction for Canada as NPD does. Canada accounts for up to nearly 400k 360s, and nearly 300k Wiis. That means not including NPD estimates for June, North American totals are 3.1 million for Wii, and 6.0 for 360. Add in in the last 4 weeks for the USA and Canada, and you end up at 3.5 million for Wii (80k USA for 4 weeks, 10k for Canada ~ 3.46 million), and 6.2 million for Xbox 360 (40k USA for weeks, 5k for Canada for 4 weeks ~6.18 million). Xbox 360 and Wii have probably an additional 2-3% in sales from Mexico, Latin & South America, and that is how Vgcharts numbers differ from the report ckmlb.

I noticed the PS3 difference but it was a small number in comparison so I assumed it didn't include June NPD making it a correct number. On the other hand, the difference of the other two was too big for one month.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

Nice strategy bundling with Motorstorm. Still, $500 is still a lot. If MS answers, I think PS3 will have to wait till a new price cut to really start closing MS lead in America.

Well, 180k may seem little to you but it sure is a lot for the PS3.

Could be just me, but this price cut announcement seems to be missing something.

Before the "cut" PS3 was $499/$599
Post "cut" PS3 is $499/$599...

This is obviously some new meaning of the word cut I wasn't previously aware of.
