Sony has lost this gen and they know this for 1 1/2 years.

They are hard at work preparing the PS4 for a possible launch in mid/late 2010.

There is no need for MS to launch a 720 in 2010. I expect 2009 to be the year with the best sales of the 360.

Launch a console and then replace it after 4 years? we're not talking about MS here.

Neither 2009 nor 2010 will see the launch of an Xbox 720 - I wasn't talking about any new Xbox. I was talking about how the 360 launched 4 years after the original.

If Sony launches PS4 in 2010 depends on PS3 sales in the next 6 to 9 months. - those sales will be good, nothing to worry about.

The bad launch of the PS3 forced Sony to start development of the PS4 very early. Then PS3 sales picked up. The situation now is ambivalent. On all accounts it is necessary for Sony to have a new console for a possible launch in 2010, if necessary Sony is 3rd in this gen they are the ones who need the fastest replacement. - everyone starts their development in one form or another after their console is on the market. Why the hell do they need a faster replacement? they have the most powerful and future-proof console. Also one that has lots of price cuts ahead because of parts getting cheaper.

Sony cannot and will not release a new console after only 4 years. Sega unfortunately (I miss you guys) made that mistake with the Saturn going into the Dreamcast.

LOL :)

If you really don't unterstand why Sega had to stop the Saturn as soon as possible you probably aren't understanding much in this industry ;)

When EDGE-magazine opened the Saturn the first time and I could count more than 20 chips on those boards i almost fell off my chair, knowing that this machine is finished.

I believe the Saturn was difficult to develop for because it used a different kind of shapes when designing characters than other systems (quadrilaterals instead of triangles) did and it added a second processor to one-up the Playstation. The chips they had in there didn't even really work well when added together anyways. With that problem, it wasn't getting as many games as they wanted to and the PS1 beat them out. By the time the Dreamcast came along, 3rd parties were mad because they had to develop for a new system when they didn't even get a handle on how to develop on the one before it, abandoning Sega. The lack of 3rd party support coupled with the strength of the PS2, led to Sega's "demise".

I know a little.

It not only was difficult to develop for.....it just was too expensive to produce. At launch day at least $500, if not $600. Sega could blow a few hundred million dollars on it and sell some million Saturns with a dramatic loss and that was it. After 9 mio. Saturns they had to pull the plug. The Dreamcast on the other hand was very carefully and well designed. It would have deserved a better fate, but Sega already was too weak because of the losses due to the Saturn.

Unless something goes horribly wrong and Sony discontinue the PS3, it should easily reach 50 million before the 360. I see it reaching at least 100 million sold in total. The same as the PS1 but not as much as the PS2 of course. The 360 may just reach 50 million but not until after the 720 is out.

xbox will sell less in 09 than in 08 for sure, and ps3 will sell more in 09 than 08 for sure. ps3 has more games coming out in 09 and it WILL have a $100 price cut or two $50 dollar ones. but the 360 cant really have a price cut because they just lowered it twice in only three months time.

when mass market realizes that PS3 is in third place then they will stop buying PS3. Mass market doesn't buy the console which is in third place. Mass market hates losers.

Talk about cherry picking, you probably don't even know what games are coming out for the 360 next year. You don't know if the PS£ will have a price cut you're just hoping it will ... and how did they lower the price twice in 3 months? the first "price cut" was a clearout of the 20gigs, M$ can afford another price drop next winter.

I can understand everyone saying the PS3 will sell 50 million before the 360 but that's only if Microsoft decides to stop making 360's after It's fourth year of production. Because at the current rate the 360 should be even with the PS3 in sales this year and next unless Sony does another price cut (which they should anyways next year).

I believe MS however will keep the 360 going for 6-7 years before they put out their next system. Why? Profit. Microsoft has lost a lot on the original XBox and they are still in the red lifetime with the 360 after their initial year and the RROD warranty, so they need to make up some of that. Just ask the stock holders. Anyways the 360 is going to be out for 3 years on November 22nd in the US.

It's just that simple.

Care to explain how?
