I don't understand this concert.
Aren't they waisting energy by doing this huge spectacle?

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

I didn't watch it, but some of the acts would have interested me (huge Pink Floyd fan...). I think my brother was at the Sydney concert - until he rang me to say he was going(3 days ago), I had never even heard of the concert(s).
I'm all for saving energy. There is a lot that can be done *easily* (and cheaply), and that's a great place to start.
Solar panels can be good, but they aren't the simplest or cheapest solution. They actually require a lot of energy to create, are generally very inefficient (for electricity anyway) and you need to get a few years out of them (at least) to make it all break even.
Other simple things:
- don't keep chargers plugged in at powerpoints when not being used
- turn off stuff at powerpoints rather than standby (I'm guilty of this with many things)
- don't flush (as often) when "yellow"...
- install rain water tanks at home (big in Aussieland)
- turn off speakers, amps when not being used
- instead of using heaters (too much), try putting some warm clothing on!
- cycle/walk/public transport as much as possible (when possible)
- carpool/give people lifts
...and best yet - buy a Wii rather than a PS3! I'm doing my bit... :)

Nocturnal is helping companies get cheaper game ratings in Australia:

I already don't flush when "yellow" haha and when i move into my apt. I plan to change the bulbs to CLF bulbs and also install a low-flow showerhead. however, I am buying a PS3. I think I found a nice medium =)

yes! Buy a Wii rather than PS3! PS3's take up more energy, thus a bigger carbon footprint. Let's all sing together

| That Guy said: If the government subsidized the installation of solar panels on houses, then it would be a lot more prevalent (and cheap). As a developer, you want to cheap out on the materials as much as possible so that you can make more profit. If the government gave you a tax break or something for using green features, then these things would be more commonplace. For a homeowner, it usually is too much money in the beginning to invest into a solar thingee. |
The government doesn't have to subsidize it. There are solar power companies that install panels on customers' homes, and instead of paying them up front, they sell you the electricity at a guaranteed fixed rate for 25 years. If you're a DIY guy, you can take out a home equity loan and make the payments on that instead of your power bill.
These ideas are still more expensive right now, but in the next few years they should reach parity with other forms of electric power.
I watched most of the concert. I like the Chillis with by the way as well :D I was disappointed though, that Madonna closed Wembley, and with Hung Up, which isn't even one of her well known songs, plus I think they should have gotten The Who, or something similar to close it. I'm annoyed I missed Black Eyed Peas though.
In regards to the enviroment (as a household):
We cycle/walk for short journeys
Turn things off stand-by overnight
Keep the heating off as much as possible
Use electric hobs and cooker rather than gas
We recycle anything we can
Have a shower most of the time (although it's a power shower, so that probably gets rid of the enviromental benefit lol)
Give money to enviromental charities
However, I personally am not a fan of groups like Greenpeace, purely because they're so against Nuclear Power. I know that waste is hazardous, but with oil/gas/coal running out within 50years, we really need to make sure we're using as little power from those sources as possible. Also, Nuclear Power produces very little CO2, so as long as the waste is properly disposed of, then it's good for the enviroment. In fact, did you know wildlife as thrived in the Chernobyl area, and they have found NO mutations, so even when things go wrong (although it was purely their fault, as they were doing testing, and removed the frickin control rods!) it's not like a loada three-eyed fish start to appear. Personally I'm annoyed at their lack of compromising.

Lol... No mutations?!... So that's why the people who had to clean the roof of the reactor have an expected life of 50 years of which 60% has already died and all have complaints in their arms, ears, eyes and legs.

THE NETHERLANDS
Well not extra eye or anything. That doesn't mean people/animal can't suffer from radiation sickness, as they're fairly different things.

Really? do you see the wii trying to save people form cancer and alzhimers? No. The wii uses 10 watzz for online the 360 uses 2.3 and the ps3 uses 1.9 watzz. The wii uses alot of power for online alone.

i was at the sydney event, must say that crowded house was crazy with every one singing along and whilst i dont particluarly like sneeky sound system they where fantastic live
