...and just to be clear, I believe Eurogamer, and Edge magazine will both consign to giving Disgaea 3 and Tales of Vesperia 6/10s.

They gave MGS4 8/10s....6/10 is what you should expect.

Eurogamer and Edge base their scores on innovation, right?

So they say. Frankly, I'm not a fan. It seems like they are trying to change the way games are made with their reviews, punishing games that stick to the same old stuff, but better. It's ideological reviewing, as the reviews aren't based on fun, but rather, "Does your game help progress the industry."

I say bullshit considering Halo 3 and GTA 4 scores.

I completely agree. It doesn't help though that Halo 3 just won most innovative game, at what was called the "Edge awards" or something similar. I'm not sure if it's related to the magazine, but giving Halo 3 "most innovative game" is bullcrap, and shows the industries bias towards hype.

I played Halo 3. The single player was mediocre, the online was fun, but not much better than Halo 2.

I disagree with you here. It was the Online system that won them the award so your opinion on the single player doesn't factor into this. I think they gave the reason as something like the integration between their Theatre mode (Red vs Blue anyone?) Forge, the bungie.com website and the actual gameplay. Its pretty cool stuff but I would say you'd have to get pretty deep into playing Halo 3 online to really understand it all, I don't to be honest.

Tease.

Looking at IGNs review, 8.2 may be a little lower than it deserved. They knocked points off for a lack of originality and a linear design....what did they expect from a JRPG?

IGN never said anything about lack of orginality(unless you are referring to the story not breaking any new grounds thing) and they said that ToV actually has plenty of times where you can go to places other than where the main plot tells you to.

And about the complaint they had about the skits.  Newflash for them, those skits are no more dated than LO's Thousand Dreams

"Clearly, Tales isn't breaking any new ground in terms of story." Yup, i meant concerning the story

"Although that story plays out in a linear fashion." Maybe not the whole game, but still

@Zen-I mentioned never needing to grind in the game, so that would be why I felt recipes were not important. Was there something to accomplish with a powerful team built from grinding? I managed to finish with Lloyd in the 50s and the rest of my starters in the 30s and still beat Ygddrassil on my first run. Also the same effect could be had in battles by buying MP potions instead of food for recipes and you can use a healer on your team in the background to just continuously heal. When they get low, pop them with a potion and they're good to go. Same effect, less hassle.

At a certain level you get an uber attack, where Lloyd busts into supersayajin, splits into 4 dopplegangers and pwns stuff. Also there is the battle arena. Next, your score determines what you can buy for new game + and it gets better the higher level you get. Finally there was a sword that dealt damage based on amout of enemies killed.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.

Every JRPG has a story that plays out in a linear fashion, and the Tales of series stories are usually relatively generic(though well done), like FFVII, however, they have great character development and interactions, like FFVII, and by the end of the game, you probably would care for all the characters, if you weren't a cynical curmudgeon like WoW.

Read the IGN review. You'll know if you would like it or not by the end of that review. You should also check out the video review, if it interests you.

What makes a generic story well done?

EDIT:Sorry, awkward question

I'll go ahead and guess the user reviews for this game are gonna be great. Those people who are going to be first introduced to the series, will probably be floored by goodness, lol.

It's one of those series that you don't really know how awesome it is till you play it, like Elite Beat Agents or Phoenix Wright, imo.

...and yes, Soriku, that bmg is freakin' breath-taking.

What makes a generic story well done?

Well, a generic story can have great pacing, great character development, great direction, great dialogue, great drama and comedy, and be all around excellently produced. It doesn't need to break new ground to accomplish those things.

99 percent of modern movies have a generic story. Live Free or Die Hard, for instance has a very generic story, but it has great characters, and you want to go back just to see John McClain and hear his wit.

Stories don't have to be original to be well done. Character development is part of Story, afterall, and if you consider that, then it's hard to find a better story than the tales series.

Tales fans will be interested to know that all the skits are voiced. Which is amazing considering their frequency.

I have plans on playing this game in the future, but this feature right here is turning me off big time from wanting to sit through another 70+ hours Tales game, no matter how great the gameplay is. The voice acting in the demo I found atocious. Thank god the skits are optional.

Check "sound" in the reviews. They have only praised it.

No i've played the demo. I know what the voice acting is like and I hate it. Unless the final game has better voice actors(highly unlikely), i''ll be skipping the edits altogether this time around.

Contrarily, I liked the VA, and feel it was almost on par with ToS. I agree with IGN here. imo, the English VAs did a pretty good job, and the more voice the better. Luckily for those who disagree, there is always a volume knob.
