Forums - Gaming Discussion - How many people know the 360 is more powerful than the Ps3?

It's not as cut and dry as they'd like to make you think it is, but for gaming the 360 is more powerful than the PS3.  Without getting into the technical details, it has a slight fill rate advantage, a slight memory advantage (more flexible architecture, less OS overhead), and a signficiant general purpose CPU advantage.

As we get into later generation games, it should become more and more obvious that the 360 is more powerful than the PS3 -- developers will be using libraries which will take better advantage of additional threads as well as having a growing and improving multithreaded codebase.  This will benefit the 360 much more than the PS3 due to the 360 having 3x as many general purpose hardware threads.

The PS3, of course, will see some improvement as well but I'm saying that the gap between the 360 and PS3 will grow due to the hardware disparity.  The biggest disparity -- the extra PPC970 CPUs -- is the hardest to optimize for.   The SPUs on the cell just aren't suited well toward gaming.  You can't improve libraries to use more single precision floating point calculations if you simply don't need them done, and they're not a substitute for general purpose CPU power.

Can you stop acting like a fanboy and admit tht the ps3 is more powerful than the 360 in gaming in everything, the cell is 3 times faster than the xenos, and the rsx is actually equally as powerful as the ATI. the only advantage the 360 has is the ability to use more than 256mb ram. The ps3 is more powerful than the 360 in every aspect. You sound like that guy in the xbox forums rambling that the 360 has the best hardware.

Sony fans are in denial. Game after game the 360 beats the PS3 but they ignore it or say 'Wait'. Madden 08 will run at 60 FPS on the 360 and 30 on the PS3. Why is that? Because the 360s GPU is far superior to the PS3s GPU. Look at 'The Darkness' on both systems. The 360 is far superior again. How much evidence to you Sony fanboys need?

As in FAR superior is incorrect, there is no game that looks way better on the 360, the reason why the graphics look better on 360 is generally(your probably looking at gamespot images) because the cell is so much faster than the xenos that when you port the game that you easily developed for on the 360 on to the ps3 not only does it get messed up you have to change the entire coding and everytin, and the time for that is limited therefore they work on it a little bit and then release the game. The only game that was actually re developed for the ps3 was oblivion, and the ps3 version looks better than the 360 version.BIg exclusive games like uncharted(whicih by the way looks beter than gears of war) will show you what the ps3 is capable of just lok at haze, a game that looks almost like crysis.

dude haze is also coming to the 360, then we will see the big difference. (which won't be there). And it doesn't nearly look as good as crysis.

Well, everyone expects that because the Xenos is a GPU

yea i agree i dont think haze will be too different... it definitely doesnt  llook as good as crysis...

Its pretty obvious you dont have a clue about what are you talking about .Just one information bit ....general purpose is about double efficiency calculations ,needed for things like Excel ,Powerpoint etc .For sound ,graphics ,IA etc having a general purpose advantage is absolutely futile .By the way both consoles have the same memory (in fact if one has a memory problem is the 360 wich shares the same bus for both GPU and CPU with the RAM while PS3 has 4 buses ) as the RSX can write and read over the memory system at will .One more thing ,the PS3 memory is XDR at 3200 mhz instead of the 700mhz DDR2 of the X360.So they are even in quantity but the quality of the PS3 memory is much greater .

Given that the Devs have said that no home PC wil be able to run Crysis at it's highest settingn it's release and they recon that it will be at least 2 years future proofed then I should hope that no 7th gen console game looks like it.

It hasnt been confirmed for 360 yet. It was annouced, and ubisoft hasnt said a word about the 360/pc version after they dropped the release dates. Do you think gears of war looks nearly as good as haze? and according to some of the developers of gears say they had to put the 360 to its maximum to achieve those type of graphics.

Just one thing here. Main system memory of the PS3 is 256MB Rambus XDR at CPU die speed and can be accesed by the GPU via the CPU, just as you said.

Graphics memory is 256MB GDDR3 650 Mhz (1300 Mhz effective).

X360 has 512MB GDDR3 at 700 Mhz (1400 Mhz) that can be shared directly by the CPU and GPU.

The three current generation consoles have a 128 bit memory interface.

Just wanted to point that out

Comparing free online vs $50/year for Live, is just not a valid point. There are many who do not play online, so it doesnt make a difference to them.

At this moment, game developers who have been developing games for these consoles for the past few years, have admitted that they are still unable to unlock the true power of the PS3. I dun think some story writer can decode the Cell processor, unless he is some engineer who had many years of CPU architecture and designing experience. Since IBM is the developer for both CPU, email and ask them which is the most powerful.
