U neglected to mention that sega isnt sega anymore. Its Sega Sammy. Sammy bought sega out... The company is just going with what sells the best, which is currently wii.

| noname2200 said: Your logic train is a bit flawed, though: as Nintendo proved in the fifth and sixth generations, a properly run company can still get a good profit out of second or third place. Thus, the failure of Sega to survive after that era can only be blamed on Sega itself, and not on any other company. As to the rest of your thesis, though, I would add that war and business makes strange bedfellows. You might, for instance, remark on the irony of Squaresoft avoiding bankruptcy primarily by the aid of Sony after their first Final Fantasy movie, only to have Square-Enix supporting the DS much more than Sony's own PSP (of the XIII "betrayal-ton" we shall say nothing here). All that said, Samba de Amigo's gonna rock. That is all. |
Well, it wasn't so much the home consoles that got Nintendo through those 10 years, it was the Gameboy and Gameboy Advance plus Pokemon that were bringing in the vast bulk of the profits. That's one of the reasons Sony entered the handheld market. They realized they couldn't kill Nintendo by just winning on the home console front.
My Top 5:
Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger
My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3
and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.
Sega is the reason, through their marketing campaigns in the 1990s and the Mortal Kombat fiasco, that Nintendo is always considered a kiddy company making kiddy consoles. Now Sega is providing Nintendo with two of their most M-rated titles to break the stigma with the new House of the Dead: Overkill and MadWorld. How's that for irony?

I'm just going to say, pretty damn ironic.
Pixel Art can be fun.

Belike (although I think you're overestimating Sony's hatred of Nintendo if you think the PSP exists just to wipe Nintendo out). But even if Nintendo didn't have the Gameboy, I'm pretty confident they would've been able to pull a profit from their consoles or, at the very most, a small loss. Remember, this is a company that's always sold it's hardware for a profit, and which has always made a ton of money off its software. I stand by my statement: if Sega was better managed, it would not have been forced out of the console business.
sega is hoping to make lots of money from the wii and then release the forgotten Sega Realitycast console in the year 2012. The sega Realitycast will then develope a mind of its own, and with its new found mind will start killing humans in the attempt at playing them like we played it. Thus the end of the world comes. in sega's defense....."Atleast the new sonic game was good"
Ironic ,is bit much but definitely thought provoking.
One thing I would like to add though while nintendo has become thier greatest source of success in software sales it also the main reason that sega sammy arcade division is going down in flames now that is more ironic.
I love fighting games !!! Come on challenge me !
Yeah it is.. I've seen those SEGA commercials on youtube of them making fun of Nintendo.. must have been bloody times back then...

Indeed, Nintendo vs. Sega was like World War II. It was very bloody but some advances in technology (or gaming) were made. In the end, it leaded to several innovations in the industry.
Pixel Art can be fun.
Actually it's pretty cool, I really wish Nintendo would just take over SEGA then get Miyamoto to take on his vision of a Sonic game, that would be killer haha.
