Forums - Gaming - Poll: So who will buy a PS3 at the new pricepoint?

Well reason why for the price drop in the US for the 60GB model is now not so weird. Just saw on Watch Impress the 80GB HDD model of the PS3 with the Emotion Engine chip, so same chip as in Europe and same specs as the launched model in South Korea. The 80GB PS3 in the US will have a retail price of.... right... 599USD. As soon as the 80GB has been released, the 60GB version has dropped in price.

Probably old news anyway, but very clear why the US will get a price drop for the 60GB model and a Japan doesn't, while the console was released about 6 days sooner:

This is announced by SCEA.

A bit off topic, but why do people want such a large hard drive for their console? Are there things that you just wouldn't want or can't find on the PS3 that couldn't otherwise be found on a PC? I keep asking the same thing about the 360 but I never really get a good answer. Usually it''s something along the lines of they like watching movies but those never last more than 2 weeks or 24 hours after you watch them. The huge hard drives (for a console at least) just always confuse me.

Like I said before, anything less than a $130 drop will be seen as halfhearted and not effective. The problem is that Sony needs to fight perception. The PS3 is currently seen as a poor gaming value (compared to Wii or the 360) and poor BR value (cheaper BR and HDVD players are available).

Most customers are looking for one or the other, so PS3 being a better combo value is of little import to the many that see the tasks as discrete and compare the PS3 to the dedicated devices.

So, if PS3 were to move units off the shelves, it needs to position itself as compelling value in one category or another

I expect this to have a roughly +30% sales for the first month and negligible impact (less than 10% greater than current sales) afterwards. The increases it will see will be more from new titles and xmas season

The PS3 might actually catch up to the 360 in weekly sales

Seeing that at the new pricepoint the PS3 is right now number 1 at the amazon charts its clear quite some people are buying it due to the price drop .Just that ,of course ,they arent the same types that spend hours of their life bashing Sony in the internet and when Sony drops the price keep saying as a mantra that they wont buy it .
