Spring Time 2009
Ds should get a boost from this Christmas making it at 90+ million by the end of 2008
then slowly reach 100 million by springtime... specifically by March maybe...
At the rate it's selling: 500k*17 weeks= 8.5 million.
Add in Christmas to get the total
I'd say 91 Million, the holiday boost won't be as big as other consoles because of supply.
April for 100 million.
July they announce the DSmicro/liter/pro or whatever they want to call it. Out in time for Christmas 09.
I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.
At the start of the current fiscal year Nintendo expected to ship 28 million DS consoles, while they shipped just over 70 million up until then. Considering they managed to ship almost 7 million units in Q1 the 28 million seems a bit low for the whole fiscal year. But even if they eventually end up shipping 30-32 million units this fiscal year they'll only end up shipping 100-102 million at the end of March 2009. This causes me to expect DS to reach 100 million sellthrough somewhere in March-April 2009 and for the end of 2008 it will probably be close to 95 million.
I've said for a long time it will have shipped 100M by the end of the year. It will be in Nintendo's January earnings report.
Last year, people were saying 2007 would be DS's "peak" year in America and Europe, but it is slightly ahead of 2007 in America and obviously waaay ahead in Europe. It has already sold 8.28M this year in "others," while it "only" sold 11.69M all of last year, according to VGC.
"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."
Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.
