Well so long as it sells >600k between the U.S and Japan its a success because Naznatips will owe me some Wiiware! xD

Well its shaping up to be a success but we won't really know till next week. I just felt like giving this thread a bump.

Don't forget about Europe(even though ToV doesn't get released there until 2009. ToV sales could suprise us(in a good way I might add) and we can't be sure until we see actual sales numbers for the game.

I hope so, it will be great for the JRPG genre in general to get some decent sales under its belt. Its been pretty much dead on every home console platform so far. Fingers crossed that it can find its feet on the Xbox 360.

Edit: Because the JRPG market place is far less crowded than last generation the Tales series should be getting some decent attention from people who haven't specifically been into or played the series before.

I never played a Tales yet I definitely want to get ToV right after I beat LO(not too far from finishing).  There is a suprising amount of people who never played any of the games in the series yet are interested in ToV on the internet forums.  ToV as the same thing that made ToS successful:lack of competition(IU wasn't that hyped even on the internet)

Thats true actually. Im the same, though I can't play it until 2009!

For the Tales game I think the >80% reviews should help it a bit as its a psychological milestone for a lot of potential consumers.

Tales of Vesperia 110,000

Phantasy Star Universe 100,000

Operation: Darkness 4,000

Total Sales: 9,804,000

1,460,000

1,485,000
Average Sales: 754,154

243,333

185,625

To compare: The Xbox 360's 2nd best selling RPG has more sales than the combined sales of either PS3 or Wii RPG sales. Interesting reference point, no? If I'm missing any, please let me know.

That is the most dishonest list I have seen in a long time. Mixing WRPGs to make the 360 look better is low. Without the WRPG (it is pretty clear that the Xbox doesnt need any help in that genre) the 360 lose 7640 k in games.

Wii

Baroque - 5k
Chocobo`s Mistery Dungeon - 130k
Dragon Quest Swords - 690 k
Fire Emblem RD - 530k
Oopona - 30k
Shiren The Wanderer 3 - 100k
Super Paper Mario -  2430k
Tales of Symphonia 2 - 220k

Total: 4135k (1705k without Paper Mario)
Average:516.875k (243.571k without Paper Mario)

(I won`t list FF My Life as King even though it is a RPG and a new game)

PS3

Disgaea 3 - 110k
Enchanted Arms - 150k
Valkyria Chronicles - 140k

Total: 400k
Average: 133.333k

Note: I am not that familiar with the PS3 library so if I missed something tell me. Also 2 out of those titles (66% of the list) are Japan only numbers.

Xbox 360

Blue Dragon - 500k
Enchanted Arms - 140 k
Eternal Sonata - 270 k
Final Fantasy XI - 240k
Lost Odyssey - 800k
Operation Darkeness - 4k
Phantasy Star Universe - 100k
Tales of Vesperia - 110k

Total: 2164k
Average: 270.500k

@ Its a Mii.

This is an RPG thread (overall) games like Fable 2 are being discussed as well.

It even says in the title, "Microsoft's 2008 RPG gambit...."

flames_of - "I think you're confusing Bush with Chuck Norris."

 Wii: 80-85 Million end of 2009 (1.1.09)

RE: the question posed by the thread.  ToV is out, IU is out (right?) and this week's 360 sales are absolutely abysmal.  If IU needs another week to show up, let's see what things are like then.

Microsoft's RPG gambit: almost certainly a failure in net dollar terms, and the 360's console sale numbers should be worrying to enthusiasts.

So it is ok if I include Zelda TP and Sonic TSR to inflate the sales? Or maybe Dynasty Warriors is also a RPG (considering that Marvel games are usually more of hack and slash than RPGs)? Some of those WRPGs are much more action oriented than the usual slow paced, turn based RPG. They rely more on reflexes than stats and strategy. IMO Dragon Quest Swords also doesn`t belong to that list. The issue I have is that mrstickball list was dishonest. I don`t think  MS had any sort of Gambit with WRPGs. They are doing very well, thank you (and they are irrelevant on any other platform save for PC).

The issue right now is with Japan sales and overall JRPG fans.

Anyway here is a 360 WRPG list if it makes you feel better

Oblivion - 2530k
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance - 2470k
Mass Effect - 1980k
Two Worlds - 350k
Kindom Under Fire: COD - 310k

Total:7640k (5170k without Marvel)
Average:1528k (1292.5k without Marvel)

Kingdom Under Fire is not a WRPG and it is not a JRPG.  That game was made in Korea so it's more like a KRPG(Korean RPG)

I agree with Squilliam (for once), the RPG genre includes JRPGs, WRPGs, MMORPGs, etc... Just because you wish to ignore an entire sub-genre, it doesn't mean you're right (it's like those people who don't include MMORPGs in the RPG genre because they don't like MMOs).

And damn!! There's only 3 million-seller RPGs on consoles??? That's really poor, I thought there were atleast 6 or 7.

@Riachu

There's no reason to starting naming Korean RPGs are KRPGs, because they usually are MMORPGs and don't have any unique characteristics that differentiate themselves from the Western MMORPGs (other than revenue scheme). KUF:COD is really one of the exceptions, so it's better just to say it's an Action-RPG.

a success for sure, and 2009 should be great as well. cryon, maybe blue dragon2,star ocean4,ff13 and who knows what other rpg's ms has secured for the rest of 2009.

GAMERTAG IS ANIMEHEAVEN X23

PSN ID IS : ANIMEREALM

PROUD MEMBER OF THE RPG FAN CLUB THREAD

ALL-TIME FAVORITE JRPG IS : LOST ODYSSEY

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=52882&page=1

Considering that all of these jrpgs failed to get exceptional reviews with only Last Remnant also coming to PS3 and Star Ocean 4 still possibly heading to PS3 shows that it was pretty much an epic fail of a gambit for Microsoft. The highest review score IGN has given any of these games is an 8.2. And, if IGN, a site that traditionally gives high review scores to jrpgs isn't finding any of these games to be better than an 8.2. That certainly says something. It's about time for Microsoft to see how their next system fairs.

My most anticipated games:  Whatever Hideo Kojima is going to do next, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Gran Turismo 5, Alan Wake, Wii Sports Resort.  Cave Story Wiiware.
