Forums - Sales - Does a gaming system also being a media hub make you want to buy it?

No because I will never use most of the damn features. Reason I own a Wii and why I'll buy a PS3 and not a 360.

The BD player in blu-ray was definetly a big plus in me buying it, and I really love it. I have a lot of different videos and all my music on my PS3 as well, so all in all, it wasn't a decisive thing, but a huge bonus still.

I buy a gaming console to game not to use as a media hub since I got my PC connected to my TV which offers way more options than the system have.

I bought a PS2 and cared a lot at the time about the fact that it could play DVDs.

I like my devices to be seperate for several reasons.

  1. More often than not dedicated devices do there job better than an inclusive device.
  2. More often than not it costs more to have one device do three jobs than three devices do one job each.
  3. Two words - device failure. If my console was ever to break, I still have my dvd, dvr, and pc to keep me happy. If I was getting all those functions through my one device and it failed, I'd be hooped. Worst of all would be if my super mega media console had a problem that the manufacturer felt required it be shipped in for repair - I'd have zero functionality but wouldn't be able to justify spending the bucks for replacement devices, knowing my uber device would be coming back someday.

Yea...

The benefits of exclusive functionality far outweigh the benefits of multiple functionality. Objects are designed to fulfill jobs, and as with a Swiss Army knife versus the dozen or so tools it comprises itself of, the product which does the most jobs does them all the least impressively compared to other options in that department.

Sky Render - Sanity is for the weak.

One of the biggest reasons for choosing a PS3. It has so much power that it would be wasteful to NOT use it as media center. The CELL processor is perfectly suited for media handling and in this area faster than any PC.
It loads HD discs faster than any BluRay or Hd-DVd player it can use external hard-discs with divx files. Its simply awesome for that kind of use.

as long as it play games, I would buy it.....

I use my PS3 equally to play games and as a media center.

That's why I bought it. Bluray is a must, but UPnP is at least as useful. I like to have my whole music collection, all my pictures and movies in my living room on my TV.

I also like to browse google maps on my HD TV with the PS3 browser, always impressive.

And I can't wait for PlayTV.

So YES, a gaming system that is a media hub makes me want to buy it.
