Forums - Microsoft - Would Microsoft have crushed Sony if the Xbox 360 had had HD DVD built in?

This thread makes the assumption that the Xbox 360 would have launched at the same time it did in reality, just with a higher price tag.

I think it would have done severe damage to the PS3 by crushing Blu-Ray. Of course, it would have been a big risk for Microsoft.

I dont mind speaking hypothetically.... but hypothetically speaking if it were to put a HD-DVD player into it it would be delayed... or perhaps hypothetically speaking the Ps3 would be rushed and get the RRoD....

Perhaps, except HD movie sales were and still are far too low to convert studios to the cause. The majority of the movie studios supported Blu-ray during the format war, so the PS3 would have still had the advantage of having the format destined to win. If the 360 had an HD-DVD player, it could have been a disadvantage.

But Blu-Ray only became relevant after the PS3's launch.  If there were already 3 or 4 million HD DVD players out there for a year or so, on top of MS and Toshiba forking out millions for exclusivity, do you really believe studios would have stuck with Blu-Ray?

I don't think a $600 price tag would have worked out too well for the 360. Sony luckily had a brand name they could run through the mud to catch on with Blu Ray. Microsoft didn't have that luxury coming off the Xbox.

Your plan is crazy and you are crazy (no offense).
Honestly, I think a better question would be: What would happen if the PS3 ran of normal DVDs like all the rest. Would there even be a contest if the PS3 launched at 400$?

Wii has more 20 million sellers than PS3 has 5 million sellers.

Acolyte of Disruption

i dont agree with you on this one.

Microsoft started this gen at a big disadvantage. if they would have brought out a console with a high price people would have never have brought it because its predecessor was not a popular product.

out the big 3 i think that sony were th only one even close at being able to get away with high prices like this.

even the "unstoppable" Wii would have failed if it tried to sell at the same price as the ps3

Sony took a big risk with Blu-Ray. In the end, it payed off (I guess). Had the 360 included HD DVD, one of the two console platforms would REALLY be hurting. I'm satisfied with the way things worked out.

Why wouldn't they have? If the PS3 came out and started selling millions, which it did, than Blu-ray would start to grow as well. Studios stuck with the format because they wanted the format war to cease as quickly as possible. And the 360 would have cost more and probably have been delayed for a couple months at least to work the HD-DVD drive into the console. Microsoft would have lost millions more than they did, and the userbase would have been smaller.

It wasnt just the studios, they also got Blockbuster into the little joyride forcing exclusivity in the store so the people who made rentals couldnt have choice. What they did was force the product on the people. Hollywood Video tried to save HD-DVD but they couldnt, because they were having problems themselves. Both Blu Ray and HD-DVD was supposed to die, but because of the PS3 it lived.

if ms took the bullet and added $100 to the price, maybe even took out the low model (which they make less money on), and delayed it; they would have been destroyed by sony and nintendo both.

sony got hit hard by 360 being clearly better and cheaper with a decent library, but without it then the 360 would have been crushed and ps3 would have gotten a lot of those 360 sales. nintendo would be in about the same position.

Blockbuster had 2,500 stores with both HD formats in their stores as trials. Blu-ray was the clear choice for the consumer. Blockbuster then made those 2,500 stores all Blu-ray and then slowly made each store carry them. They werent forced.

EDIT: Sorry it was 250 stores. I added an extra 0.

"Blockbuster has been renting both Blu-ray and HD DVD titles in 250 stores since late last year and found that consumers were choosing Blu-ray titles more than 70 percent of the time."

if the ps3 ran normal dvd's, Sony wouldn't have put the cell processor in their also.  So the ps3 probably would have had a much lower starting price than $400, probably would have been $300.  At which point the Wii wouldn't be nearly as popular as it is because Sony selling the ps3 at $600 really opened the door for Nintendo.

Yes they DID have both...but they made a deal with Blu Ray backers to have exclusivity. HD-DVD had higher sales and higher DVD purchases than Blu Ray. The only reason Blu Ray could've pulled that off at Blockbuster is because of the FACT that the movie studios who they work with were in larger numbers of support and politics always wins out in the end.
