As soon as we saw the EA/Epic partner deal yesterday, we knew the game wasn’t going to hit Wii. The first bit of information released confirmed the platforms, and Wii wasn’t one of them. Now, Epic rubs a little salt in the wound with their further statements on the game. Check out this snippet from a Kotaku article…

And we won’t have to worry about some watered-down version on the Wii. (Michael Capps, President of Epic Games) is pretty sure this new game won’t appeal to “that crowd” and that the best way to make a game that works on multiple platforms is to build a super-awesome story, find a badass hero and then work with the system particulars to deliver tailored experiences.

What a bunch of assholes, that's my opinio

The Unreal 3 engine which EPIC makes all its money on does not work on the WII, the reason they made GOW was to show off the unreal engine they were suprised how sucessful the game was.  If unreal 4 engine works with WII or another nintendo system in the future watch them change their tune

You obviously have not read the entire thread because a license holder is already porting UE3 to Wii.

Damnit you! I wanted guesses! Stop handing out the answers to the test.

Medal of Honor Heroes 2 runs 32 players online quite well on the Wii, and EA doesn't use friends codes. So that isn't even an excuse for Epic.

Why is that not an excuse for Epic? Do they have an online infrastructure setup like EA does? So basically you mean as long as Epic makes this one game with EA it's fine to be on the Wii, but if their next game goes to a different publisher they can continue to ignore Wii development because they can no longer use EA's service?

Also define quite well. Running to third party servers over the ability to use Nintendo's own infrastructure sounds more functional than ideal. I didn't say it wouldn't work. I said it would be lackluster. Why develop games geared towards online multiplayer for a console maker that doesn't take online multiplayer seriously? Microsoft and Sony provide environments where online multiplayer thrives. Nintendo doesn't.

@Viper-A third party licensee is ATTEMPTING to port Unreal Engine 3 to the Wii. You make it seem like it's a sure thing they will succeed in their attempt.

I didn't write that it was only possible to avoide friends codes with EA. The fact that EA avoids them means anyone can.

And ign claimed the online ran well, not me. You take that up with them, if you have even played the game (I haven't, but that's why I'm posting what ign wrote, not what I think).

wow a lot of people getting really bent out of shape over this. so what if he and others dont want to develop for the wii, their business modle dosent get your money. has nothing to do with them being scared. its just not what they want to do.

@EU3 being brought to the wii makes good since, it already rns powerpc mods as evident by being on the 360 and the ps3, memory might be the biggest issue for it, but cool.

And another thread newcomer misses the point. It's the lie he told, not that he doesn't want to work on the Wii.

I'm sure what was available ran well, but there is no voice chat, which is an option I don't like parting with in Gears of War and I don't know whether there is Rep in the EA system to help avoid certain games in the future. So yes, what was available ran well, but there are many features I don't want to have to part with if I'm going to game online with the Wii.

Also it's possible for EA because they're a large publisher. Not everyone can shell out that much money for a third party option to house their own servers. So no it cannot be done by anybody. If Epic goes to Midway again to publish a game for the Wii, Midway will not be able to provide an EA-like online infrastructure. That game WILL be using friend codes.

Well, it is a sure thing.  The company doing so is already working on the game for it.   Let's not forget that Treyarch managed to get the COD 4 engine to run on Wii just fine.  Can you explain in technical details why the COD 4 engine could be ported well but not UE3?

Depends on if the engine is designed to be scaled or not. Evidently, the CoD 4 engine is. UE3 may not be, but that developer will prove whether or not it is.

Can you provide links for this? All I can find is the original article from Nov 2007 where Mark Rein says in an interview that an unnamed licensee is bringing the Unreal Engine 3 to the Wii. I can't find anything on Google past that. What's the company's name, and what is their game?

Also I do not know the difference between the COD4 engine and the UE3 engine. I do know Mark Rein said this in regards to the licensee, "It's their own port, in the same way Ubisoft brought Unreal Engine 2 to the Wii [for Red Steel]," he said, noting prior to that response, "I just don't see a big market there to bring this big hulking memory intensive engine over to a much smaller system."

If this were going to be an easy port and/or Epic thought the Wii could handle the engine well, I think they would have just done it themselves. I'm sure some of the aspects of the engine can make it to the Wii, but I don't think the Wii can handle the whole thing at once. But yes, this is coming from someone with no real technical knowledge on the matter, so I could be wrong. Can you back up that this can be done with technical terms?
