Forums - Gaming - The "Tales of" series, and exactly why Vesperia is a "big deal"

^It is the other way around, actually. Also, the PS3 crowd is hungry for JRPG's - Namco has a spot to fill up with this game. Besides, the tales fans on the 360 are only well established in Japan - it's still niche in NA/Europe, and Japan, IMO, will do better.

I don't think Namco is going to fool around with the Cell just for a port though, especially since the majority of Tales sales come from Japan and PS3 isn't exactly lighting up the charts there in the first place. With none of the core Tales teams having any known experience with the PS3's architecture that might be just a little too much trouble for a Vesperia port. PS3 fanbs may be hungry for JRPGs, but tha'ts what FF13 is for.

Yeah, I doubt FF 13 will be as good... and as soon...lol. A tales team doesn't have to do the port - the guys that are porting Eternal Sonata can do it. After all, the game IS ready and finished... also, more PS3's in Japan. My bet is that there will be around 3,2 mil by the end of the year.

Informative topic and it's very interesting. Personally, I can't really say I'm a fan of the Tales-series, because I've only completed Symphonia and only played Symphonia and Abyss, but I'm very hyped for both Vesperia and Dawn of the New World... Too bad I live in Europe :p

Its review score comes out to a high 8 or low 9 at best. Almost all FF games have had much higher scores.

My most anticipated games:  Whatever Hideo Kojima is going to do next, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Gran Turismo 5, Alan Wake, Wii Sports Resort.  Cave Story Wiiware.

Have you ever seen a game from a massive franchise (GTA, FF, Halo, etc.) get panned? It's pretty rare. Not even that girl power snoozefest FFX-2 got bad reviews- Metacritic average of 85 or so last I checked.

Do you think that a game that receives a high 8 or low 9 is supposed to be bad? Or is it only bad if it's 360 exclusive?

Sorry, but what does that have to do with this thread? Btw FFX-2 has an average of 86% on gamerankings just because it's called Final Fantasy. Also while most FF games get 92% averages the only ones I would put in the 90s are FFVI, IX, IV, and maybe X. The most of the rest I would rate in the 80s and then a few in the high 70s. So reviews are a good general representation on the quality of the game, but they are just opinions and opinions are different for everybody. Anyway I don't know why you would post this in the thread that has nothing to do with FInal Fantasy.

....and that's why I hope it's ported to the PS3.

Symphonia went to PS2, it is very likely that Vesperia will get a PS3 release in Japan, simply because it would be easy to port, and sell a lot of units.

With a PS3 release in a year or so, there is a lot of potential for sales of this game, worldwide. Particularly if it shares the same "cult classic" status of Abyss and Symphonia.

Isn't 360 -> PS3 hard to pull off? Or was it the other way around?

Either way I'd say a Wii port was more likely. There's no established Tales fanbase on the PS3 like there was on the PS2, with DotNW, New Tales, and Sword of Legendia, it's a little hard to argue that Namco has not chosen the Wii as its preference for the franchise. Wii also has a larger install base to sell to which makes an impact when you realize that Vesperia got outsold by a Tales gaiden. Lots of potential there.

Yes very, its why EA is lead developing games on PS3 and then porting them to 360 now. A game developed with the 360 in mind is much more difficult port to PS3. Multiplatform games lead developed on PS3 and ported to 360 get simultaneous release dates. Multiplatform games lead developed for the 360 and ported to PS3 are often subject to delays and sometimes cancelations. Not only that the game usually ends up running worse than the 360 original.

Nice post. I was going to post something like this today but you ebat me to it :P

Also, you're kinda wrong about ToS: DotNW. It was developed by both Team Symphonia members and new members new to Tales. Let's just call this team "Team Ratatosk". ToH is being developed by Team Symphonia members and Tales of Destiny: Remake members so let's call that team "Team Hearts".

So some members of Team Symphonia help with other games as well?

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
