Forums - Gaming - So many Sequels? Does anyone esle not want new games

bouzane said:
Personally, I think the video game industry is stagnating due to the vast majority of publishers insistence of producing an endless barrage of sequels. I wish creativity and originality would become common-place once again.

In that case, buy a Wii and/or DS and have your faith restored.

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

I never said or suggested otherwise. XBLA in particular has been extremely successful with new IP, between mega-hits like Braid, Geometry Wars, and Undertow, as well as lesser-known (but still great) games like Cloning Clyde and Wik: Fable of Souls. But there's a big difference between a $10 downloadable game and a $40-$60 full retail title, and the Wii has both HD consoles beat in the latter category.

Yeah, the $10 game is more easily accessible to new developers.

Assassins Creed
Bioshock
Rockband
Mass Effect
Gears of War
Resistance
Uncharted
Saints Row
and many other games were new IP's this generation and they'll get a sequel because they were so good.
Mirror's Edge will also have a sequel. I'm more than sure about that

True, but on the other hand, the full retail title is usually more fully-featured, fleshed-out, longer, and has higher production values in terms of graphics and sound.

@ Barozi: It's interesting to note how all of those games fall easily into already-established, popular genres. They may be new IP, but they were hardly risky to develop and publish.

And the full retail games are more accessible to the consumers.

I will admit there has been a plethora of good new games as you mentioned

Assassins Creed
Bioshock
Rockband
Mass Effect
Gears of War
Resistance
Uncharted
Saints Row

I own ever one above, I try to support the new games.

PS3, WII and 360 all great systems depends on what type of console player you are.

Currently playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Fallout 3, Halo ODST and Dragon Age Origins is next game

If it’s a sequel it doesn’t mean its not new it has the same name but with a now feel too it like Mario Galaxy.

That is true Mario does do a great job of re inventing itself

If you want original titles then stop buying so much from retail. Downloadable services are where it's at. For the price of one Wii game, you can have anywhere between 3-10 downloadable games, and with the HD consoles it's between 4-12.

I'm very confused about why people keep saying the Wii though. I don't see how the Wii offers much more in original IPs than the HD consoles do. It's pretty lackluster in my opinion.

I like sequels, for instance if you but a new Mario game you know your going to enjoy it.
