Forums - Sony - Regarding LittleBigPlanet anti-hype

I may have engaged in what some consider "anti-hype."

But my points have been that I don't expect it to be a "system seller" -- cause hundreds of thousands of people or more to suddenly buy PS3 consoles.

I also wonder about some of the sales predictions. Selling 4M on a 16M base means one owner out of four buys it. That is very high for any game and only a few (e.g., GTA IV, Halo series) have been over that purchase-rate. (For comparison, the top non-controller-included Wii games have been bought by less than 23 percent of consoles owners).

The game itself is essentially a platformer with a level editor. But it looks fantastic and appears to be a lot of fun. It should do well. But maybe 2.5-3M well, not 4M well (at least without a lot of legs).

So if trying to be realistic about sales predictions in anti-hype, then I'm as guilty as charged. I guess I just don't see this as a "savior" title some are making it out to be. Hopefully I will be proven wrong because unique new IPs need to be honored.

I'm in a very similar position ...

Little Big Planet is one of those games which is in a market position different enough from most games on the PS3 (as well as most games in the industry in general) where there is a very high risk that it won't be able to find a large audience. The best example of this that I can think of at the moment is Katamari Damacy, which was heavily hyped on forums because of how clever and original it looked but didn't (really) see outstanding sales.

But how much advertising and backing from Sony did Katamari Damacy get?  Basically none.  LBP may be in the same type of situation in some respects but certainly not an identical situation.

It could have been me, but I saw quite a few advertizements for Katamari Damacy and there were some coverage in general interest "Entertainment-News" shows that have some coverage of videogames. Now, Little Big Planet will receive far greater coverage but (as has been demonstrated by games like Heavily Sword and Uncharted) even good games which are heavily marketed and are well suited to the demographics of a system do not (necessarily) end up with amazingly high sales.

little big planet will try to usher in user generated content on consoles. the idea is phenominal

this game is looking to be one of the must have titles this year and surely a xmas blockbuster.

LBP will only be availiable on ps3, and i predict within the year attempted copies of this game will try to be made on wii360

the online co-op is staggering to say the least, as is the scope to make your own levels

day one purchase for me

grafix are top notch

i couldnt give a damn about microsoft and nintendo anti hype on this game.

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

The bigger hype is there for the game, you're gonna see more hate towards it.

Also known as Halo-syndrome (nah not really, but it should though). Boy did no. 3 get more hype/hate than it deserved.

On-Topic: I'll definitely buy LBP. My only reservation would be the physics engine falling flat on it's face, but it seems unlikely that'll happen.

I think the reason why this game gets as much "anti-hype" (though I haven't noticed too much of it myself) is because usually when games become this ambitious they fail at delivering and people who had been flying the flag get kicked in the cahones for their faith. It kind of sucks that games will be pre-judged because of other games burning hopeful players previously, but that's what happens.

Also, I think there's a lot of over-estimating LBP going on in OP, because no one really knows how the final product will turn out and how user content will turn out. For instance, I will not spend too much time on LBP if building a nice extravagant level is excessively long to do nor is there a guarantee that people won't gimp the physics system immediately after launch.

AND I don't think MS and Nintendo are particularly concerned. Nintendo's already have boomblox (another physics based game) and well if MS were really concerned they'd bring out a similar product.

Regardless of how the game turns out in the end, Little Big Planet will likely end up getting a lot of "Anti-Hype" after it is released because some people's expectations can simply not be met ...

I'm not saying the game will be bad, but there are countless games (like Black and White) which have used AI or Physics in new ways which (sometimes) pushes how every game after them will be developed, but because the usage is new people don't have managed expectations and they find that the limitless possibility they imagined is far more limited than they thought.
