Due to games like Deus Ex, Fallout and Planescape I have to vote for WRPGs.

Of course. I'm saying WRPGs averagely have better stories than JRPGs, but there are several japanese RPGs that have good stories, and one even great by my standards (FF6). The problem of JRPGs is that they don't take advantage of gameplay-integrated storytelling, which would increase alot the quality of their side-quests and improve immersion. I agree that Oblivion is an abortion of an RPG. |
That would be hard to do since there are things that JRPGs do that can only be done in cutscenes. If they intergrated the story into the gameplay, the potential plot points they could pull off would be limited. It could work if the method of storytelling isn't used in the main story events and only for the sidequests. Another problem is that the characters in JRPGs are premade so it would be hard to immerse yourself, especially if the protagonist speaks.

Bring back random encounters and worldmap ala FF1-9.
thats why Lost Odessey is my favorite rpg this gen.
Long? games should be long the longer the better I wich games could be 80+ hours main story. |
Disagree so much. One problem with JRPG fans is that we hate innovation. We want the same battle system. The same encounters, etc. We have huge Tales fans, and the reason why they exist is because each game is very similar to the next. You won't ever be surprised with them.
Fallout 1 and 2 are WRPGs /thread
JRPGs have great stories but WRPGs allow for true role playing. I am the one who will decide whether to save the world or destroy it not some writer with ridiculous concepts of justice. In Fallout 1 instead of saving my people I came back with high tech weaponry and slaughtered them all for being lazy. I also risked my life to save a town while getting annoyed at some other place and wiping those citizens of the face of the Earth.
The only problem is that Fallout was the pinnacle of WRPG and so far several games have gotten close KOTOR and Mass Effect but due to the political climate of modern world, developers cant allow true freedom. And by true freedom I mean everything, in fallout I could sleep with people of both genders, kill women, men, children, dogs and cows; I could capture people into slavery, I could become a drug addict and run around with a cyborg dog. Hell, I caused a nuclear meltdown once, it was funny.
