Forums - Sony - Is buying BluRay movies worth it if you own a PS3?

So I was looking through my movie collection and looking at what ones are available on BluRay.  I've already converted some movies since Amazon and Best Buy both often do sales where I can get them for about $15 a piece but there are still a lot more to convert if I want to go all the way.

But I also started thinking about something again that has been bothering me for a while: the PS3 upscales DVD's.

Why should I buy the more expensive BluRay movies if the cheaper version look just the same?  I can either pay $30-40 for a new movie on BluRay or pay $15-20 for a DVD that looks exactly the same because the PS3 upscales my movies.

Did Sony shoot themselves in the foot by upscaling DVD's?  I admit, I love the feature but it doesn't really make me want to switch to BluRay since they look the same.

Also, is there really that much of a difference between an upscaled DVD and a BluRay movie?  I freely admit I can't tell the difference but I'm also not a huge video junkie.  I'm sure that very small minority of people that are the super video junkies could tell a difference, but can the average person?

There are soooo many things wrong with that sentence... I don't even know where to begin to repute.

let's be fair, if you can't tell the difference between a naive 1080P movie.. vs 480P upscaled DVD.. there isn't much I can say.

No, please do.  That's kind of why I asked the question.

And yeah, I can't tell the difference and I'm wondering if most other people can't.  I know I've asked many people at work the same question and all of them can't except for a single person and he's a huge video snob.

well im not so sure, since i havent bought a movie for it,but i think its better then DVD's since it looks sharper

blu-rays still look much better than dvds even if they're upscaled.

Depending on your screen size and the resolution that your using, you will or will not notice a difference. But native always looks better than upscaled, especially considering your upscaling from a very small 480p. But the size of your screen plays a big roll in all this.... the smaller the screen the better it will look. I say if you can't notice the difference, stick to DVD for a while until you feel happier with Blu-Ray...

I think it really depends on your TV resolution. You wouldn't even notice if it's not Full HD.

Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

Watch my insane gameplay videos on my YouTube page!

IMO Blu looks marginally better than a well upscaled good encoded DVD, but the question is how important is the 7.1 audio and video improvement.

I wouldnt buy blu just based on the fact that I have friends that I watch movies with and I dont want to have to lug a PS3 around so my friends can watch.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

If your TV is UNDER 46inches, Do Not Buy Blu-Ray Movies, there is no need.

DVD's are fine With-Out Upscale on 46inch TV's and below.

Like stated above the PS3 upscales DVD's that look almost identiacl to BR's on even a 54inch, I know, I own a 54inch and did not see a diffrence with my DvD compaired to BR of Talladega Nights (came with PS3), only BR I owned.

I can't judge wether its worth it but I will say that the difference is noticeable both my ps3 and my standalone upscaling dvd player produce a fuzzy image with off colour speckles, while the bluray is crystal clear.  I only own one bluray due to the fact that where I live there is rarely a bogo deal (I've never seen one except for buy a $40 dollar spiderman 3 get some $10 imax africa disc).
