A recent article shows ~75% of all XBL Gold members are in the USA. ~25% are in Europe, of which a large majority is in the UK.

There clearly hasnt been widespread adoption in non-English speaking communities as they will get matchmaked with English speaking gamers.

Because MS sold the 360 a year before nintendo and sony. That's it is the only reason.

XBOX 360 is an american companies product, so may well be the patriotic choice for some.

There may still be a little animosity from some to the Japanese. They did launch a rather dirty surprise attack on Pearl Harbour.

They also used to brutalise their POW's and to this day refuse to apologise.

Then again they did get nuked (twice)

America is the land of the Walmart shopper - there is no patriotic loyalty when making purchases anymore, except possibly in the case of random redneck buying revision 20930920930293 of the F150.

Quite simply the Xbox 360 has a much larger library of games that Americans find interesting at this time.  Great diversity of FPS, racing, and fighting games.  Tackling the RPG niche helps too, with both fans of JRPGs and WRPGs getting their fill here.
