Despite having a PS2 and my PS3 being just around the corner, last year I bought a DS over the PSP for what I perceieved to be more games which focused more on fun and less on graphics but still decent.
I was very disapointed. Many franchises that I loved playing on my N64 had switched over to using the touch screen which is worse than the PSP nub (which is decent) and definately not even close to an analog stick. The way you're made to play is to use the touch screen to move, jump, shoot, different actions depending on what game you are playing. Basically the touch screen has buttons on it, the thing is unlike on a PSP, you can't feel them and with your eyes on the top screen you're constantly sliding into the adjacent buttons. You can't feel it, so you can't tell if you're sliding into the next one. Interactive and innovative yes, but not for all types of games.
Starfox a key example. To get the airplane to do different moves, ie a barrel roll, you'd make a circle on the touch screen. To do another move you'd make a slash across it top right to to left or something along those lines.
Touch screen is good for point and click games, puzzle games, strategy games, pet simulators, chef simulators, clothes designer simulators and even waitress simulators; not for adventure, action and platforming.
Of coures Castlevania and New Super Mario Bros are two exceptions I remember for action/platoform/adventure that didn't stink.
Then you have some N64 ports and remakes; I have an N64 so I wasn't particulary interested in those.
Another reason I grew to hate the touch screen is in games like Sonic Rush, he'd occupy the top screen and go down a hill and still be on top but then he'd go down another hill and poof, now he is in the bottom screen. You'd jump up a platform and then later in the level you'd jump another one and now he is back up. Completely at random. I'd found myself and friends noticed too, that it was hard to keep focused on where Sonic was because they wanted to milk that god awful gimmick touch screen.
My 3rd reason for not suggesting a DS, is comfort. The DS is what? 6 7 inches wide? Like I said the touch screen is used for many things, so your thumb must stretch 3-4 inches to control versus the PSP with it's buttons located near the edge just like every other bloody handheld ever invented. But put the controls you're using the most in dead centre away from where your hadns are holding it like the PSP. Not extended your thumb for the duration of the game. Metroid Prime I was not able to play for more than 20 minutes. Keep in mind the touch screen, we all know even the best touch screens on phones or anything lack the responsiveness of a plain button. Don't get me wrong the DS has good responsiveness for a touch screen but it's still a touch screen therefore still not anywhere near a button or analog. The unresponsiveness is a major setback when playing anything fast paced, action or adventure games. I found myself swiping twice every now and then in Metroid and he'd move but I'd lose movement. I couldn't get my Metroid to link so I never played multi.
Brain Age linked no problem. Weak link for higher tech games with the DS maybe?
Like I said, before any DS fanboy gives me hell for stating my civilized, mannered opinion, it's great if you want to play puzzles, make clothes, play strategy, raise pet dolphinz or dogz, pretend you're a waitress or chef. It's also good for playing GBA games which, thank god, don't force you to use the gimmick touch screen. Also good if you can find a action/adventure DS game that doesn't use that like New Super Mario Brothers.
But the PSP that I'm buying come mid August has games I know I'll like.
2 Syphon Filters, Rainbow 6, Sega Genesis Collection(way better than Sonic Rush), Castlevanias, Jean D Arc, GTA Liberty City Stories, God of War, Metal Gear PO, Resistance, 3 Socom games, Medal of Honor, Call of Cuty, Rachet, Dazter, Clank.
Really depends on what you want to play but I wouldn't automatically assume you'd like the DS becasue of all the hype.
