Nintendo considering holographic storage solution for Wii?

July 30th, 2008 Posted in Rumors, Wii, Written by Valay

Even though the lack of space on the Wii to store downloadale games, content, and channels have been a persistent issue since the console’s launch, Nintendo may finally be considering an approach - although unconventional - to solve the problem. An excerpt from a filed patent hints that Nintendo may be considering a holographic storage solution, in conjunction with InPhase Technologies, for Wii. “In compliance with 37 C.F.R. .sctn.1.71(g) (1), disclosure is herein made that the claimed invention was made pursuant to a Joint Research Agreement as defined in 35 U.S.C. 103 (3), that was in effect on or before the date the claimed invention was made, and as a result of activities undertaken within the scope of the Joint Research Agreement, by or on the behalf of Nintendo Co., Ltd. and InPhase Technologies, Inc.” It may be worth noting that the patent was filed a few months back, at a time at which one could argue Nintendo was not seriously considering a storage solution. Whether or not this is still a realistic possibility is up in the air, especially since an HDD would make more sense. However, any fix, even if untraditional, will be more than welcomed by the hardcore Nintendo crowd.

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

Doesn't a holographic disc cost about $300,000 to produce? I think I remember reading that somewhere when I was doing research for an essay.

Kingdom Hearts 3 Bet: If Kingdom Hearts 3 becomes a multiplaform title/is not Wii exclusive then I will be banished from this land for 1 week and sing my praises to those who have proved themselves to be more intelligent than I.http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y267/RDBRaptor/rdbraptor_sig16.jpg%5B/IMG%5D">

Nooooooo.. the disc would cost $120-$180 but the reader would cost $15,000...

Could get the HVCard.. $1 a piece at 30gb... but then the readers cost $1,800.. reader/writers are even more expensive

What if Nintendo isn't planning on a disc, but something with fewer moving parts?

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

maybe they are looking holographic storage for their next console, i think holographic storage is too expensive right now to be mass market product.

Wii/Mario Kart Wii Code:2793-0686-5434

I still think they're just going to open up the SD slot.

# of games above 75 on Metacritic (including downloadable):

360: 241     DS: 144

PS3: 152     PSP: 126

Wii: 85

has to be for wii2 - way too expensive of a technology atm.

Yeh considering all the talk of the next generation not starting until at least 2012 and maybe a few years after that I'd say Holographic media storage tech will be incorporated into the next console and maybe not as a disk drive system.

That may be even less intimidating for Nintendo's new audience than the disk drive eating the disks =P
