Forums - Nintendo - Does Game Informer hate the Wii?

I wonder how Game Informer really feels about the Wii.

Given its coverage and the lack of respect its games receive from its editors (I mean the ones deserving respect), I don’t think they like it.

And if one needed anymore evidence, let’s look back six months … to the magazine’s Wii preview for 2008

The banner teasing the article in the February issue said 20 Wii titles – 19 were actually discussed in the article. And some heavy-hitters were intentionally omitted. “The collection purposefully strays from commonly covered games in favor of new arrivals or those that we haven’t heard about for a while.”

So far, 13 of those 19 listed have been released – and not a one of them have a Gamerankings score higher than The Dog Island (68.0).

The list – with scores from GI and Gamerankings where available – is as follows (as well as any comments I might have in italics):

  • Baroque (NA, 54.8) – Why did anyone have high hopes for a 10-year-old Saturn port
  • Bomberman Land (6.5, 57.3) – At least you can play Bomberman
  • Deca Sports (3, 53.7) – After buying it, I know why Nintendo said NO to Mii-s in it
  • Dragon Quest Swords (7.75, 65.8) – GI liked it more than most
  • Emergency Mayhem (5.5, 44.7) – Great potential, low results
  • Fragile (NR) – Expected to be good
  • Harvest Moon (NR) – Hard to mess this one up
  • House of the Dead 2 and 3 (7.5, 66.3) – A good port of old arcade games
  • Monster Lab (NR) – What little I have heard about it has been good
  • Mushroom Men (NR) – Very highly anticipated and getting good pre-press
  • Ninja Reflex (5, 52.4) – Target dropped it $10 upon release
  • Obscure (3, 55.2) – Obscure (pun intended) and poor survival horror
  • Oponona (5.5, 67.0) – Highest rated released game on the list
  • Samba de Amigo (NR) – High expectations, but Sega reworks have not met hype
  • Target Terror (4.5, 38.3) – Campy bad
  • Wii Music (NR) – Well-received at E3 2006, Not-so-well at E3 2008
  • Wild Earth: Africa Safari (5.75, 64.7) – I know nothing about this title
  • World War II Aces (NR, 34.3) – Matches Destineer’s track record
  • Wonderland Amusement Park (NA, 40.3) – Appears to be bad Carnival Games clone

Other games not covered that could have been (unless GI felt it was too otherwise hyped) that have only come out for Wii among this generation consoles:

  • Battle of the Bands
  • Blast Works
  • Boom Blox
  • Castle Shikigami III
  • Final Fantasy Fables
  • No More Heroes
  • Pinball Hall of Fame - Williams
  • Samurai Warriors Katana
  • We Love Golf
  • We Ski

Discussion is welcomed.

With only a small intention of being a jerk, I must say that I feel quite bad for gaming magazines ... Between the large gaming sites getting all of the big news, countless blogs giving every imaginable viewpoint on every subject and exhausting all topics, and both of these happening months before a magazine can publish it there really is no place for gaming magazines anymore

Game Informer is a review outlet; of course they hate the Wii. It makes their lives more difficult.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

Nah, the Wii hates Game Informer.

I guess what got me going was when I saw the issue laying about ... and remembered that I bought at least two games (Deca Sports and Ninja Reflex) because of this article.
