Forums - Gaming - How much space do games take up?

Like for the different consoles...

For example, how much for an NES game? 1 mb?

I'm requesting info (including average and maximum size allowed if possible) on the sizes of NES, SNES, Genesis, Saturn, N64, PS1, Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox, GCN, 360, PS3 and Wii games.

Thanks if anyone can give me any of this info.

Top 3 favorite games: Super Mario Galaxy, The Sims 2 (PC), The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

If I remember correctly...

NES games were literally a few kilobytes some were a few Mb
SNES games were mostly 8-32 Mb (1-4 MB) with a few 64mb (8MB)
N64 64Mb-512Mb (8-64MB)
DS sames as N64 (with better compression) and I think there's a 1024Mb chip (256MB)
GCN proprietary discs were 1.5GB

DVDs and CDs are standard... Dreamcast had GDs which were modified CDs that held 1GB

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

Well I think DVDs allow about 7GB, BDs on PS3 mostly allow 25GB, but some are on dual layer discs

DVDs were 4.5 GB, although some consoles can use dual layer DVDs, I'm pretty sure both the wii and the 360 utilise this.

PS2 only had single DVD layers

Some recent DS cartridges have allowed for 256MB, but I think most have an 8MB to 128MB range.

Snes cartridges were 4MB (I think) and Metroid was something like 16MB

The nes had cartridges of Maybe 512KB.

Apparently the atari 2600 only had 4KB cartridges, I know you didn't ask but a fun fact nonetheless

@ highwaystar, the Wii does not use DVD, it uses the "Wii optical disc" but I think they are basically the same

They're DVDs.

Ask Captain Hook, he'll tell you.

Wiki says the largest SNES games came to 48mbit (6MB) and there were some N64 games at 32Mbit (4MB)

The biggest Wii-Game yet is SSBB. It takes approximately 7 GB. As far as I know it is the only Wii-Game out, which uses double layer technology. Normal Wii-Games can take up to 4 GB.

Wii optical discs are the same as DVDs (but are legally distinct), but they are known as wii optical disc to avoid liscencing for DVDs and also prevent copying games. Although the latter has already failed.

At TWRoO: Your right, the largest actual cart was 48Mbit, there is homebrew software that allows for 64Mb. Sorry.

Also, the licensing fees they don't pay are for the DVD playback and the name DVD , they still have to pay the ones to license DVD-Rom technology in the Wii.
