I know where the PS3 is: last place.
I wonder where full PS2 backward compatibility went for the PS3. I heard it was a cornerstone of the playstation name. The Wii is fully Gamecube backward compatible.
Sony isn't producing many BC PS3, mainly because all their profits come mainly from the PS2. If Sony made all the PS3's BC then buying a PS2 would be pointless.
They can't let the PS2 die yet, but that means PS2 is stealing sales from the PS3. Sony is in a very bad position now, Kaz sounded like neither MS or Nintendo can do anything about the PS3 (He's very wrong, MS has stolen a lot of exclusives and Nintendo has probably won the gen so far).

The 10 year life cycle is not a right to all Sony consoles. It is a prize to the victors.
Once a new console is released the core gamers flock away from the older consoles. The casual audience is the one keeping older systems alive with sports sequels and such.
The PS3 has far less casual appeal than the PS2 or PS1 ever did so they won't enjoy that long life. Once MS releases a new console, Sony will have to follow suit within a year or so to avoid giving MS an overwhelming lead. And when they do the PS3 will for all intents and purposes be dead.
Sony can't just take the casual for granted and think that they will flock to them when the PS3 goes below $300. By the time they can get the PS3 priced down to mass consumer level, the Wii will have cornered the casual market. BR won't help at that point either. There are some standalone BR players already cheaper than the PS3. By the time one of them hits $200 consumers will grab that instead of a PS3. It won't matter if the PS3 is still the superior BR player. The type of consumer who waits for such a drop is usually one who doesn't know or doesn't care about certain features like updated BR profiles.

Itll be much more likely than it was this time, because this time it was Sony's use of 2 items of new tech that drove up prices: Cell and Blu-Ray. Both of which will be cheaper when they are used in PS4. And they will be (the former vastly upgraded in specs and number of chips).
Kind of a weird statement, bringing up GC and Xbox. In a way a bit sad, sort of like the guy who was really really good in high school football but now just sits around at the bar everynight talking about how awesome he was.
