They stopped selling, so they stopped making them.... the same happens with almost everything.
PS1 stopped selling properly in 2003, and was discontinued in 2005 (with no proper support software wise for the last 2-3 years except the yearly FIFA from EA)
The wii is 100% compatible with everything released for the cube and the 360 maintains some sort of bc. The ps2 is still on the market because sony gutted the bc on the ps3 - and the only reason they did this is because if they lost ps2 hardware margins the division would be in the gutter, financially speaking.

bah, the 10-year plan is a joke. If Sony was serious about it they would follow the 20-year plan the NES followed in Japan.

I know where mine are, in a cabinet next to my TV. BC ftw. If I want to replay a game for my XBOX that I have data for, I will just pull it out but that hasn't happened. The Wii has my GC memory cards in it.

Hmmm, the money thing is a big issue, but Sony gets money from various sectors of their business to keep going just as MS does. Also, we keep forgetting that Sales of the PS3 are going up and once Sony has broke even probably end of 1st or 2nd quarter next year, we will see a vast improvement overall. Given the 10year life cycle (if they stick to it), they have 7 years to make their money back and profit. So it isn't as bad as it sounds. Which is why the 360 needs to make money back sooner considering it only has a 5year life cycle.
You can put a spin on this topic from either side; the ps3 or the 360, but the truth remains to be seen.

Making a profit =/= Breaking even.
They'll break even when they have reported 3 billion profit on the PS3.

So E3 came and went, and we still don't have a hard and fast date for Home yet. Sure, we've got a "fall" dating for the Home Beta, but still, people have been waiting. And people kinda wish that Sony would hurry it up! According to Kaz Hirai, Sony's trying to make it right so that first time users have a positive Home experience. Fair enough! Says Hirai, "...we don't want to prematurely launch it and then be dinged for having a bad service... this is a platform initiative which means that we need to be extra careful that we've crossed all the 't's and dotted all the 'i's." And hey, Sony is in it for the long haul. No need to rush. Just listen to Hirai chime in about that 10-year-life-cycle and keeping the last hardware generation alive:
