Forums - Gaming Discussion - 360 DVD better then PS3 Blu Ray for Gaming

This is not at all an accurate representation of the situation, and it only uses one game as an example.  So this is for you:

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

I dont know if this has been mentioned. But with the recently announced attention to the 360 it will get a install machanic that will allow you to install the games to your HDD...well if 3 mins is tough on people how in the hell are people gonna be happy installing 4 discs in the disc drive? that's pretty damn close to 20mins excuse me how long was devil may cry's install time that people where complaining about? The blu ray was the way to go cus not only does it make for a cleaner neater space. But also if you break one disc damn there goes your game. Yes of course you can break one disc. but you are more likely to break a mulitple disc collection by switching every time you wanna play...I have more agruments but i'm listening to techno which is calming my mind right now and its hard to think ^_^ any one care to join me?

Even with the install mechanic %70-%80 of 360 owners have a Core/Aracde which would make it impossible OR have an Pro/20GB unit which also a little but of install but is limit, even compared to even the 40GB PS3.  It's only practical on the %30-%20 of Elite owners or 60GB and 80GB PS3s.

That being said, what is the cost of 120GB HDD for 360?  Here in Canada $210!!  Expand your 40GB PS3?  A non-propriatery HDD for PS3, even a 200GB can't be more than $100.  An 80GB HDD for a PS3?  Any ideas?  $60?

PS3 library:  Motorstorm, Assasin's Creed, Orange Box, Uncharted:DF, Metal Gear Solid 4, Resistance:FOM, Rachet & Clank Future:ToD,

Near future: Folklore, SOCOM Confrontation, BioShock, Little Big Planet, Resistance 2.

yeah but you would still have longer load times on the 360 if it had more discs installing helps load times like DMC4 has longer load times on the 360 because it does not install

Currently that's true. I expect Sony to release a PS3 with 4x for Blu-ray a little further into the generation as there are already PC Blu-ray drives with 4x support (4x Blu-ray>12x DVD). When that happens, I expect a lot more optional installs with future games and patches for mandatory installs to become optional installs.

not sure if sony will integrate a faster bd drive, but its definitely an option in a later version that would probably remove most needs for installs. (also i guess that 8x drives will apear in the next years too)

I fully expect them too. It's becoming a really tight space to breath in for both Sony and Microsoft competing against each other. They keep trying to 1up each other. If Sony were to announce a faster Blu-ray drive (faster than 12x DVD), all the complaints about Blu-ray being slow would completely disappear. I don't see Sony being hesitant either because I'm sure 4x Blu-ray drives in a year or so won't drive up the production cost much if at all. The advantage of faster loading times for the 360 will be gone with just 4x Blu-ray drives let alone 8x Blu-ray drives. If Sony does do this, I really do expect patches to be released for mandatory installs to become optional, and I bet even 20GB and 40GB owners will choose not to.

I know this is off topic but its closely related some how. If Microsoft does think about making a new system Sony doesn't really have to do anything they can keep the ps3 why? Well look at Wii it will still stay the Wii and if Mircosoft tries to out do both of them making a console that doesn't require disc with 1TB HDD and 2Gigs of Ram and a All might Quad Cell processor (not likely) it would easily cost 1k+ so 399 or 1k which would you rather buy? Mircosoft would really have to rethink what they are getting them selfs into they should of stuck with O/S cus the Mac Leapord is kicking their Ass right about now.

Yeah i wasn't trying to make the point that Blu-ray is an inferior format in any way, it's just his arguement in terms of current gaming drive speed was completely wrong.

I love the idea of blu-ray, espically the anti scratch polymers on the disc which are MUCH more resistant to damage than DVD and i see less easily destoyable optical discs as being the future considering the amount of games (my pure guess would be 20% by the end of any generation) that are damaged beyond repair by children and idiots.

I agree...I can't even count the number of DVDs that were scratched from my brother or parents not putting the games back in the disc case. I was pretty stressed about it last-gen, but now I don't worry about it as much the Blu-ray. I think you pretty much have to TRY to scratch the things to do any damage.

4-5 discs, sounds like a lot.

I lost a few of my rpg discs for playstation, namely Final Fantasy 8 and had to buy a new one. Taking care of one disc is much easier.
