Forums - Nintendo - Dead Rising Wii - A lackluster port

I think you guys are missing the point.

I think the best part of Dead Rising was the sheer number of zombies (much better, brighter-looking zombies as well) that you could plow through and have a good time.

With only a dozen around you, you'll kill them and be left with nothing. I'm sure there will be...enough...but these screens don't bode well at all.

I'm not condemning the game, but this is not at all a good indication of what the game will end up like...it just seems to have no colors or anything interesting compared to the 360 version.

And I'm not at all saying the Wii can't handle a sh*tload of zombies.  I do think that if the game is made poorly, it can't though.

You can disagree, but I think you're a little full of it if you say this is what you expected. "Uneducated opinion based on screenshots of a game which is far from completion"? Basing an opinion on these screenshots is the most educated opinion you could have at this moment.

People poked at Left 4 Dead because it started a little rough around the edges...gradually it's improving and I'm proving people wrong, because I know Valve will do a good job.

I don't know if Capcom will do a good job.

Well stated.

These are some of the first screenshots of the 360 version, and pretty indicative of the final product:

These screenshots were from the game six months before release, and all show tons of zombies to mow down.  And the top picture, which is near the end of the game, there are literally thousands of Zombies there.  I mean, it's relelntless.  And the first pictures are uninspiring.

But like was said, the game is far from complete, so lets hope things change.

You know what? This port is going to suck.

People are still going to buy it anyway.

Games that sell well on Wii have simple concepts.

RE4 = "Shoot Zombies"
RE:UC = "Shoot Zombies"
GHIII = "Play Guitar"
Sonic and the Secret Rings = "Run"
Mini-Game collections = "Have fun"
Lego Games = "Kill Sith/Nazis"

Casuals are very easily distracted by shiny objects and cover art that has smiling faces. You have to sell 'em fast.

Okami = "See there's this wolf, and a paint brush..."
Elebit = "Catch these critters with a..."

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

And I have countless times made the writers at Kotaku look like amateur bloggers and this will be no exception.

Starting with a basic bit of logic I already posted about.

Wii is more powerful than GC.
GC in 2001 powered a title that had over 100 objects on screen at once.
Each object was composed of 3,000 fully textured and lit polygons.
Each object also had it's own A.I. path.

Gears of War has more detailed enemies than Dead Rising.
Basic Gears of War enemies are composed of 10,000 polygons.
It can be safely assumed that Dead Rising zombies are composed of far less than 10,000 polygons.

Wii can render more than 100 objects at 3,000 polygons each.
Or Wii can render 100 objects with more than 3,000 polygons each.

By this very basic and incredibly simple exercise in logic and deduction, it can be safely assumed the Wii can render more than just a dozen very low polygon zombies.

You know, this reminded me of the south park episode with the Jeff Goldblum-type scientist making a string of deductions.

This is the exact script from the episode:

Jeff: Whoever they are, if they're receiving messages, they might be sending them, too. Wait a minute. c-candy bars.
Kyle: Candy bars?
Jeff: Yu-you know. Candy bars. They usually come in a wrapper. Just like you... wrap a Christmas present. Christmas happens when it's cold. Cold, as in Alaska - that's... with polar bears. Polar bears... pola... polarity! I can switch the polarity to see what transmissions are coming from the location this one is being sent to!

The number of zombies on screen in Dead Rising was not consistent through-out the game. In the early parts there are about as many zombies as you see in the screens. Based on the level of Frank in those shots, I am fairly convinced this is from the early parts of the game. There is just not a lot of evidence to point to the Wii version getting a completely crippled port as yet. These screen shots do not inspire confidence admittedly, but they also don't show anything you wouldn't see in the original Dead Rising.

I guess it just seems crappy because they're all horribly bunched into one little crowd. It would have looked better if you could see more zombies wandering in the background, but it's basically just these guys right in front of you.

And they just look...awful. Horribly gray, no lighting...I sure hope it gets improved in that department at least. I have definitely seen better from Gamecube and PS2.  I don't normally pull out that insult, but I know the Wii can do a ton better than this...and I don't get why so many people here are defending this.  You can tell me it's going to improve, but don't tell me that looks good.  It looks TERRIBLE.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Yeah, since he's level one, it's from the early part of the game.

I posted the same thing in the news section.

damn,this game look like a PS2 game...............

The horrible bunching is also an element of the early game. I have a hard time band wagoning on hating the port right now because I have seen Dead Rising in action. The early parts of the game are very lack luster in the way of zombie slaughter. You see mostly a bunch of open space and run out of zombies to kill regularly.

I honestly can't comment on the look though. I swear I thought the pictures Akuma put up were part of the 360 version. For whatever reasons I cannot really tell the difference between a games graphics and so I have given up even factoring them into the equation. I trust you when you say it looks like crap, but that might be a side effect of trying to make sure they could have the bazillion zombies on screen later on with less slow down than the 360 version had.

We shall soon see how good (or not good) this port is.

Graphics are FAR from done.

"I mean, c'mon, Viva Pinata, a game with massive marketing, didn't sell worth a damn to the "sophisticated" 360 audience, despite near-universal praise--is that a sign that 360 owners are a bunch of casual ignoramuses that can't get their heads around a 'gardening' sim? Of course not. So let's please stop trying to micro-analyze one game out of hundreds and using it as the poster child for why good, non-1st party, games can't sell on Wii. (Everyone frequenting this site knows this is nonsense, and yet some of you just can't let it go because it's the only scab you have left to pick at after all your other "Wii will phail1!!1" straw men arguments have been put to the torch.)" - exindguy on Boom Blocks
