Forums - Sony - Sony sets 150m sales target for PS3,PS2 passes 140 million units !

If Nintendo's next console is also cheap ($250-300), who would buy the old Wii? The PS2 isn't the best analogy since the PS3 costs $400.

I dont think that ps3 will ever over pass ps2 it is almost impossible

I dont even think that wii will do it

i believe wii will slow down after passing 60 million mark

Wii is now selling better than PS2 did. Sales of PS3 might increase a lot after a price cut, since it is still expensive ($399), and it will have a longer life cycle. Why won't any console pass PS2 LTD sales?

In 2010 perhaps.

321 thats exactly my point - there were 127m shipped through Dec 31 2007.

The haven't shipped 13 million PS2s in the following six months. Sales for PS2 are declining and in the 12 months ending March 31, 2008 Sony shipped about 14m PS2s - but thats in 12 months.

So it looks like a typo - he meant "PS2 has now passed 130m shipped in its 9th year of sales". That would be a perfectly logical statement. Just from the USA & Japan we know Sony has sold nearly 2 milllion PS2s. Throw in the other markets, and the fact that shipments are greater than sell through and your easily over 130 million shipped.

Sony has like shipped 135m PS2s through June 30, 2008, but even Wii/DS can't do 13m in Jan-June

Somehow the Wii had to get brought in here.

Anyhoo.

It's entirely possible that with ten years it could do 150 million. They'd have to keep pace with at least 15 million for the next few years, with a couple approaching twenty.

Not entirely unlikely, seeing as that Sony does believe in the whole 10 year lifespan thing (look @ the PS2). A lower price point would do wonders.

I believe that if the PS3, today, dropped to $199, then it would likely sell as well as the PS2 for the remainder of the year.

Next year, however, Sony would report a 9 billion dollar loss and go out of business.

Realistically, imo, by the time Sony can cut the PS3 down to $199, it will be so late in the cycle that it will be impossible for them to reach 100 million in the time remaining.

That's just my viewpoint.

I believe Sony stated in their press conference that they were going to start shipping to some Latin America countries so that might account for it.  Remember when the LBP guy was watching the boxes go into the trucks during the press conference they said they were going to start shipping to other countries.
