Given Namco's claim that an average PS3 game requires 500,000 copies sold to break even

Gundam Masou may hit other markets. Of course releasing a title in only one market would also reduce costs. Note that to a publisher it's only important how many they sell to retailers when it comes to actual revenue (future PS3 owners may still purshase titles left in stock at retailers.

Developers and publishers don't want to just "Break Even" ... They want to make a healthy profit

On top of all of that most publishers have to factor in their opportunity cost (the ammount of money they could make on another game) and the value of the IP they are creating. The DS (and potentially Wii) will end up causing headaches in terms of opportunity costs because you can produce multiple titles for these systems which can each sell at reasonably high levels for the price of one PS3 game ...

That's short term thinking. If retailers have plenty of games in stock left from a certain publisher, they may not order that many copies of the next game from the same publisher. Those retailers often have to sell the games they have left at a discounted price to make at least parts of the money back.

Of course selling as much as possible to consumers is important, but on a per game basis it's important they generate enough revenue. If a new game receives good reviews, there are many pre-orders, is a larger install base all affect has many units a retalers will order.

Of course everyone will want their games to sell well. With regard to profits it's mainly of importance to the publisher unless the developers are paid on the basis of how many copies were sold to retailers. Developers may also only be paid by the hour.

Developing companies may decide on another publisher for their next game, if doing business didn't go as well as they expected.

Publishers have almost all the power, not Developers; you make it sound as if developers get to pick and choose who gives them enough money to produce their game.

Sometimes the developing company = the publishing company, sometimes it's not.

In which case the developers would never look for another company to publish their games, which was your point in the first place :p

How the hell did this turn into a damn Wii hate debate? I thought the thread was supposed to be about new charts and Folks Soul? Unless I missed something...

When fanboys can't face the truth, they change the subject.

Wow the amount of nintendo fanboys in here defending the wii is getting abit much. A good game designed for the japanese market came out in japan for the ps3 yet it sold poorly. Why? Because thanks to nintendo pushing out cheap, shallow non games the taste of japanese gamers has changed. If this continues then real games will be in decline and vastly out numbered by the the non games. It's a sad day for real gamers.
