When FFXIII comes out maybe they have a chance with Japan?
When FFXIII comes out maybe they have a chance with Japan?
I don't know why, I don't see the PS3 overtaking til 2010, but that's just me.

Overtake when what... who cares?
The most interesting thing to me is when Sony finally pulls the plug on PS2 and what happens then. The PS3 is much more costlier and is running on revenues from PS2, PSP, Bravia TVs, business IPOs (as confessed by Tretton & co.) to the point where they dont have finances for exclusitivity options. It is no longer the exclusive home of the major video gaming franchises.
Sony is transitioning from a monopoly to an oligopoly. They have to be many times more efficient. Licencing and developing crap games was no problem on the PS2 because it had all the games and sold to the masses, giving a constant stream of revenue to fall back on all the time. But now, even one bad game will hurt their brand equity and they are no where near in hitting that constant stream of revenue for their latest console. The pressure has increased nearly tenfold for their first party developers to produce the best games. They are already hedging their bets in the Japanese market.
They say when the going gets tough, the tough get going. We'll see... but I just get the feeling that Sony was not expecting it to be this tough.

Don't stress, they are just showing their fanboy panties. I read your post and understood what u mean.
It will be a victory in the current situation, as any vicktory is a will. And, non of us have a crystal ball to see ahead to 4 years now, do we?

Benga Benga what are you doing? Nothing I said even in the slightest resembles anything fanboyish. At no point have I said it will be a big achievement, nor have I said it will be a major accomplishment. I never said MS cares about being 3rd, nor did I say MS was unsuccessful. If anything, your post shows that you didn't read what i wrote and translated as YOU so fit adding a bit of your own spice and to further add to this, it doesn't look like you are a fan of Sony. If anything it looks like you are totally against sony and don't like them at all. Since you are someone that seems who likes to play fair and stick to the topic, you seem to have gone against your own principles. Nothing you said relates to the topic which is under SALES in context of the gap between 360 and PS3 getting smaller. Your last paragraph only argues one side and is out of context with the topic. try arguing both sides if you wish to remain fair. As you say yourself, fanboyism isn't anything to be proud off!
P.s. for your information. I have both at the moment. a 360 and a ps3!

I'm not off topic. You can't just post numbers and expect them to be meaningfull without the context. Feel free to discuss them without the context, but adding the financial impact of the console war doesn't make it off topic.
My last paragraph indeed argues one side. The paragraph above also, but then the other side.
By adding that you have borh consoles you imply that I think you're biased, but that wasn't what this was about. The "PS3 will beat the 360" is posted very often and I wanted to show the more in-depth complications as to why the ranking in the console wars doesn't have any meaning besides bragging rights.
And trust me, overtaking the 360 in Hardware alone is not something Tretton & co. will be worrying about in the grand scheme of things.
Heck, arent you forgetting that hardware sold now is losing money for Sony? In a weird sort of way, theyll actually be hoping that the growth is not too sharp so that they have time for reducing costs and milking the tail of PS2.
Its the software and services thats going to be what they are going to worry about. And we all know who is winning there.... Nintendo?!! :D
No betting man, not my style.
Whether it passes the 360 1st or 2nd quarter it's definitly gonna happen and next year some time.

I really don't see the PS3 as beating the 360 is even close to "set in stone" yet.
Much will depend on this Xmas - the PS3 won last Xmas "by a whisker", and that was a Europe launch Xmas PLUS a price cut. They get neither this Xmas, whereas I see the 360 having the upper hand (its still unknown as to what will happen re: price cuts/bundles at this stage).
I wouldn't be at all surprised to see MS at *least* hold the fort - if not take back some ground - primarily based on strength in the US market.
A lot will depend on how the market reacts to the 'casualisation' of the 360 - and especially in Europe (the key battleground). It doesn't help though, that MS has already made the price move (in Europe) - just to stay in touch (although with the weak US $, this isn't as a big a deal as it could have been).
The other issue is the weakness of the PS3 in Japan. Sales have boosted a "little", but its only going to take a few weeks without releases to see sales drop under the 10k level again.
Last year, on the back of some big releases sales boosted at "just" the right time to 40k-60k in Japan (start Nov), and stayed there for 2 months.
I doubt this will happen (as much) this year, unless Sony are really holding some big releases back. And MS will be unleasing the Japan RPG love stronger than ever before.
...
Although the weekly gap has increased, the overall trends have not - it was primarily MGS that gave the PS3 a good "one-off" boost, which was mirrored in the Japanese sales:
...
The "average" weekly gap between the two (worldwide) over the last 3 months has been less than 40k (probably closer to 30k) per week. Even at this sales rate, its going to take almost three years to catch up.
...
Its going to be a very interesting Xmas period this year (to say the least!).

So you expect the ps3 to sell 5.58 million more than the 360 in the next 8 months then (i.e. to the end of the first qtr '09)? An average of 697,500 per month more (or 160,961 per week) ok... want to bet? or do you want to re-guess? |
It pains me to say, but Kowenicki is spot on.
