Overtake when what... who cares?
The most interesting thing to me is when Sony finally pulls the plug on PS2 and what happens then. The PS3 is much more costlier and is running on revenues from PS2, PSP, Bravia TVs, business IPOs (as confessed by Tretton & co.) to the point where they dont have finances for exclusitivity options. It is no longer the exclusive home of the major video gaming franchises.
Sony is transitioning from a monopoly to an oligopoly. They have to be many times more efficient. Licencing and developing crap games was no problem on the PS2 because it had all the games and sold to the masses, giving a constant stream of revenue to fall back on all the time. But now, even one bad game will hurt their brand equity and they are no where near in hitting that constant stream of revenue for their latest console. The pressure has increased nearly tenfold for their first party developers to produce the best games. They are already hedging their bets in the Japanese market.
They say when the going gets tough, the tough get going. We'll see... but I just get the feeling that Sony was not expecting it to be this tough.
