It's not the price of the PS2 hardware, it's the price of the PS3 hardware.

They are keeping the PS2 out of it to force people to buy PS3 games, and thus offset the loss of the console.

it was why they removed it in the first place, and why they have not brought it back.

My guess is when the thing cost next to nothing to make, they will add it then, so they can sell PS2 games on PSN.

According to the WSJ: "Mr. Tretton conceded that removing that capability [backwards compatibility], along with a few other features, isn't dramatically reducing Sony's cost of manufacturing the console but will instead encourage buyers of the entry-level PlayStation 3 to purchase more games designed specifically for the new system."

Well, we got KoW doing this for years against Nintendo, I don't see why everyones crying now that a Nintendo fan posted something stupid that a Sony rep says.

BC - Not coming, confirmed. Good move Sony. Leetgeek, once again your spin is childish and impossible. PS2's are 100-150 dollars, isn't that right? Sony could have gave it to us for free, but instead they decided that money is more important. It's simply a business decision. Don't worry though. It's all for the good of the PS3. You'll thank Sony in the end. I mean afterall, you got such a fantastic system for so cheap. Did you really expect rumble and backwards compatibility? I mean, it's not like we overpaid for the PS3 or anything. It's worth 700 dollars, at least. Now, the Wii. That's an overpriced piece of garbage. Who in their right mind would pay 250 dollars for a videogame console that also plays all its games from last generation, when they could get one that plays ONLY true-next-gen titles Blu-Ray for $599?

Sony is protecting us from "last-gen" kiddy graphics, imo. I mean, who the hell wants a backup playstation 2? That system sucked, and it adds no value to the PS3, even though apparently it was free to add. It's good that they didn't allow us to have it. It would have ruined us, and made us not buy PS3 games, but instead PS2 kiddy games. PS3 games are next gen, and the only ones worth playing. Sony knew that so they just decided to not give us the option, for our own good.

Basically, it seems as if Sony wants people to forget about the past and buy new games.

That strategy was how things used to be done. But Sony changed that with the PS2. Now they are on the wrong side of history as the Wii offers 99% BC and the Xbox 360 better than 80% BC.

I just need to remember to buy another unit as a back-up (of course, my 30000 series unit bought used keeps going).

What I take from that entire interview is that Sony is being run by Men in Suits rather then Men with Brains

Trying to make a quicker short term buck rather then the long term repercussions.
