Sony's big announcement would be a game going multi-plat? Now that would seem desperate.

Why would you go with gears?

What they should have done was got the SE guy to come on at the end and announce SO IV as multi plat, then get him to leave, and then come back, and then announce:
KH 3
Versus for 08 release
show XIII game play
VII remake
that would have made me like SE again
