Forums - Sales - 2/17/2009 -- Analog TV gone... effect on PS3 sales?

Absolutely positive it will have absolutely no perceptive affect on PS3 sales what-so-ever.

Everybody with cable, satellite, a recent TV, digital receiver or already owns a converter box (Two $40 rebates available to every household) will not be affected at all by the change from analog to digital broadcast in Feb, 2009.

I think short term it will have little to no effect. With that said I could see it having effect over the long term. I know I am planning to buy an HD TV shortly before February. Over the course of time people will be buying HD TV's, and when they do it will lead to them innevitably looking to move up to blu ray at some point. So long term yeah I think it will, but how much I have no idea.

I have bets that it'll have little to no effect whatsoever. Why? Simply because the people affected by this(a very small portion) probably couldn't afford a gaming console anyways, especially a PS3.

How does this have an effect on gaming?

I find it kind of wierd - Sony is in cohoots with Viacom and are chief members of the RIAA which leads to a giant web of coporate buddies and suddenly the death of analog in the US...

But how does this have an effect on gaming as last time I checked video game consoles are local.

Now if Sony televisions didn't run Nintendo consoles or Microsoft consoles then I'd be appauled and in awe at the brilliance.

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

The Hunt Begins 4/20/2010 =D

I think a lot of people will make the jump to HD this holiday season. But these are people that will not be impacted by the digital over the air legislation. They already have a cable/satellite converter. But more HD customers does mean more potential 360/PS3 customers.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

It won't hurt. I would say it will help PS3 more than 360 due to BR. Won't affect the Wii at all.

i got a hd tv but not digital tv.

low quality cable, i still bought a ps3 and enjoying it, so for me it doesn't matter.

i only watch bleach anyway on .avi

I dont think this will affect conesole sales that much or even that all since people just cant fork over 500 to 1000 bucks for an HD TV right after the switch for both non and cable and satelite subscirbers that dont have one. they would have to save up little by little and even then people are not ready yet to make the switch due to other reasons. but over time it will slowly help drive sales for all consoles.

Considering that digital -> analog converters cost a good $60, and are an irritating accessory to have to throw in your living room, I'm thinking that Feb 17th, 2009 will incur something of a spike in HDTV sales -- just how large this spike will be, I'm not going to hazard a guess.

Will this have an indirect effect on PS3 sales in late 2008 through early 2009?  About what % of (North American) households own TVs not capable of receiving a digital signal?

As I recall, the law requiring TVs to have a digital tuner has only been in effect since March of 2007.

It's broadcast only (roof antennas etc.) that are affected.  Cable and sat. even hooked up to analog sets will work fine.  PS3 will not be affected that much and I don't expect people to spend, spend, spend this Christmas--gas, food, and bills take precidence.

You'd be right if many people didn't already switch to digital cable and satellite which require you to have a box anyway. The boxes convert a signal to analog automatically, the only people that might be in trouble are people still on basic non-digital cabel or satellite like my parents were till recently

I don't think you'll see any noticeable spike on HDTVs or the PS3 because of a switch to digital.
