PS2 didn't just win the console war, but it got all of the third party games and the 100+ console sales stats to boot. Not only that, but it effectively knocked Dreamcast out of the competition...

I don't know how Sony did it but they had a very good effective marketing then. And they didn't even have to pay out third party companies to get there...

I don't believe any of these 3 consoles will be the next "PS2", but if Sony got there once, actually twice if you include PS1, they can probably do it again...it's just that mega giant money hole microsoft who's stopping their win since now money talks.

I think that Wii will definitely get to the sles numbers of the PS2 if current trends continue, but I would have to agree that I don't think any oft them will have the kind of 3rd party support that PS2 did.

I disagree with the idea that Sony has the best chance simply because they've done it before, and the idea that MS is the only one standing in their way. MS is the first rival most definitely, but if that battle is ever decided then they still have Nintendo to deal with.

The industry has grown to the point where it can sustain 3 successful platforms. I don't think "winning" a generation matters as much as it once did. All can coexist and be profitable.

and no offense, but i dont see the ps3 being the next ps2
the market is too different for that to happen
i can see them outselling 360 but not by much

if anything, the Wii, imho, will be the next ps2

If the Wii gets to 40 million worldwide sales, then it is going to be the next "PS2." Especially since more people are getting into games because of it.

If I'm not mistaken, Microsoft spent less money on making the console, and lose less money than Sony, even though Sony earns money from Ps2/PsP.

So I think that either

A) Microsoft isn't using all that much more money than Sony

B) They're better at earning money than Sony

Or C), D) or E)

It's when not if.. But yeah the Wii will be the next PS2..

Also, whether or not you say that the Wii is the "new" Ps2, is purely up to how you define the Ps2.

The ps3 and perhaps the 360 will also get to 40mil sales. Will they be the new ps2?
