Forums - Sales - Virtua Fighter 5 bombs in Japan - first day sales!!

Diomedes1976 said: Darc Requiem said: There are 38 3rd party games not from Square Enix that have sold at least 100,000 copies*. There are five more games not from Square Enix within 5,000 copies of crossing the 100k barrier. By Comparison, 22 3rd party games not from Square Enix have sold at least 100,00 copies on PSP. With one game within 5,000 units of crossing the 100k mark. *Using Hanafuda's assertion that anything over 100,000 is a hit. Diomedes have you seen the sales of Capcom's games besides Monster Hunter on PSP? The only thing your point about Monster Hunter proves is that they need to make one for DS. The three other Capcom titles on PSP have sold less than 100,000 combined. Actually looking at the charts for DS, a lot of minor third parties such as Rocket Company, IE Institute, Tomy, Hudson, Spike, Marvelus, and MTO are having success on DS. Enterbrain is the only minor 3rd party with game of over 100k in sales on PSP. Konami, Square Enix, Bandai, Namco, and Sega are the only third parties having success on PSP and they are having success on DS as well despite putting their more recognizable franchises on PSP. Japan is the worst market for PSP,in any case 38 vs 22 isnt troucing the competition as it would seem looking at the total number of games sold .But look at NA and without the Nintendo and Sony games for DS and PSP respectively the PSP would have more games sold. The same for Europe ,where no one third party DS game has ever pointed its nose in the Top 20 .Its quite easy to see ,and that explains why the PSP is receiving game after game .The DS success is putting companies in the bandwagon trying to cash in with DS version in multiplattform games and some are succeding as THQ but for the others i think time will prove them this is a cow they wont milk .For example Ubi and Ea ,both have put a lot of effort after the DS and their numbers are horrible in that plattform ....now EA says it wants to push the DS developement but when you see EA DS games selling big numbers (as some are in the PSP ) you tell me . We better wait two weeks to see the first 10 days of VF5 at stores ,we are arguing over pure speculation and without having in count some data (as the faulty Virtua Stick ) .
I took out the Square Enix titles because hinted that they were the only third parties having great success on DS. The actual number of titles over 100,000 is 43 titles. Not to mention the fact that even if you remove all of the Nintendo software sales from the DS software sales total, the DS still doubles PSP software sales.

I havent enjoyed many games on it besides Harvest Moon, and a few others... I've been very dissapointed in it. I want a PSP. I think Nintendo will do the same thing with the Wii. That's why I bash it. Sony's consoles dont take off for usually 6 to 12 months after launch. the PSN store in Japan has like... 1 game, and 2 or 3 demos. The PS3 has nothing in japan right now. The Wii has more in Japan than america. Wait till stuff starts coming for consoles to start selling.
Wow, no need for us to speculate on the future of any consoles. We can just ask Kwaad to look into his crystal ball and tell us the future. Foolish me, I thought Strom was the only Prophet on the boards.

I find it quite entertaining when Kwaad tries to defend PS3 using phrases like "if..." and "wait until...", ignoring actual sales numbers. Can't wait till January NPD numbers

crappy old school NES games are more entertaining than next-gen games.

Each to their own. I use my DS almost daily, and would say its my fav console/machine ever. Between NSMB, Elite Beat, Starfox Assault, Mario Hoops, Castlevania POR, Meteos, Children of Mana, Trauma Center, (etc) I have my hands full - and these are all *recent* DS titles I have purchased/been playing. You like Harvest Moon on it? Really? (I heard that was really weak...). And a few more to buy this year (and still hoping for a bunch of new/big releases/announcements): Pokemon (probably), FF3 (or FF12 or both), DQIX, Brain Training II. My mate just sold his PSP on the weekend (traded in a PSP, PS2 + heaps of games to half the price of a PS3 - coming in 6 weeks). I could have bought it off him, but didn't see the point. That makes 4 people I now know that have sold their PSP's (semi-recently...).

There are four 50,000 sale or more titles in Japan right now by third parties. And yes, these and other titles will see sustained sales as the current ownership is small but constantly expanding. The problem is that many of the games you listed were either A: Geared towards the NA market, or B: Really really crappy games. Right now the Wii in Japan looks like it will mirror the DS. Nintendo Software is driving huge demand, which will in turn mean a large market for software, which third party develepors will wnat to cash in on. So in conclusion, Virtua Fighter 5 probably won't see great sales, but will sell relatively well for PS3 software.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

I agree with you on VF5, but I don't agree that the Wii will do as well as the DS. I personally don't think it will. I don't think it can, to be honest. We shall see. PS Jess the cat rocks PPS Whoever said that Children of Mana on DS is a good game should be shot. That is without doubt the worst game that I have yet to purchase for the DS. Tedious, boring combat, tedious, boring dungeons. Crap story. Crap characters. Crap side quests that send you back to the same tedious dungeons. Ugh. Nothing good to say about that beyond the fact that the visuals and music are nice. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!!

I don't think anything can be as good as the DS for the moment, that system is a juggernaut in Japan. My main question still remains: When does PS3 get its killer app? VF5 seems to have failed so what is next?

Buy it and pray to the gods of Sigs: Naznatips!

I don't know Robjoh. I mean its going to have to be a new IP. These current IPs that fit the description: MGS4, FFXIII, and GT5. All of which aren't coming out 2007. So your guess is as good as mine. When does White Knight Story release? That might be a killer app...well for Japan. Heavenly Sword is probably the closest to a killer app for the US market. I have no clue what that game could be in the Euro market.

Many people are speculaing that the bundled game Gundam Mushou(sp?) is gonna do better than VF5 and is the game to watch in Japan. If it bombs, it will be all but official that the PS3 is gonna struggle throughout the year and this generation or at the very least until the FFXIII is released. It's a nobrainer that FFXIII will move alot of consoles but even then, might not be enough(i.e. SSBM on the GC, Halo on the XBOX). It would also partially confirm that Japan is outright rejecting "nextgen" graphics for the gimmicky console.

The DS only started trouncing the PSP in both European and NA markets last year. Sony also shipped significantly less units in Q4 2006 compared to Q42005(I'm not sure about actual numbers but from what I can remember, Sony shipped 150,000k units to the NA last quarter compared to between 1-10 million PSP systems a year ago).

So 50,000 sold and number 1 game of the week in Japan in what is traditionally a fairly quiet period anyway. Someone better tell Japan that this game bombed. I notice Cooking Mama didn't make the top 15... Oh those wacky Wii games! At least they are cheap to make
