There's a lot to respond to (that's a good thing), so I'll start with one chunk. I would argue that, contrary to your thesis, the DS has done more for hardcore gaming than the PSP has.

It's offered us novel ways to play games, letting us do things that simply aren't possible on any other system. TWEWY, Ninja Gaiden Sword, Elite Beat Agents: these are all "hardcore" (hate that term) games that couldn't be done anywhere else. Look at it this way: do you want a Portable PS2, or do you want a system where fresh ideas can thrive?

This ties in to the Wii. The system is new. It can do things no other console ever could. And with time, developers will take advantage of that. Remember, 3rd party DS games didn't get good until about two years after its release, as developers had to wrap their heads around the system. The Wii will be the same. True, neither system can offer you the visuals that their rivals can, but gaming is far, far more than just pretty visuals.

True, but you must consider something; DS takes a step forward over GBA with vastly superior visuals, new buttons, AND adds a second screen and a touch screen. I view the Wii as a sidestep Nintendo had to take to dodge being marginalized... so while it was important for surival, this step sideways doesn't really offer anything superior to GC, just different. GC controls are taken away and are replace with simplified Wii Remote and Nunchuk, BUT motion controls are added. Unlike DS, this is but, not and. Also, graphics are better, but nothing incredilbe like GBA to DS; its more like the jump between GC and Xbox.

So will the Wii really be the same? Many great DS games offer button pressing for parts of games and stlus conrol for other parts. I doubt Wii games will ever have us plauggin in our GC/classic controllers for segments of the game that work better traditional controls. The tradiitonal controls the Wii Remote and nunchuk offer are gimped.

I just thought that was an odd statement being that the Gamecube and XBox were very similar in real world performance, and if you listed the top 10 most visually and technically impressive games of the last generation they both would have quite a few titles on that list. The Wii is a noticeable improvement over the Gamecube, the problem at the moment is the technical capabilities of the Wii are being treated like the attractive girl at a gay resort.

Sorry, but you lose credibility in graphics comparisons from that statment. You also inspired me to finish and post my analysis, since you seem to be misinformed. ALso while you may think the GC controller is superior to the wiimote, many people including me think otherwise. An example being shooters allowing for more accurate controls.

The Wii isint hurting hardcore gamers, in fact its reinveinting the game, I mean u may be as hardcore as you ike, but how would u like to play GtA 5-6-7-8-9 the EXACT same way or any game for that the SAME WAY over and over again, the Wii is all about innovation, and its reinventing the game.

Benefitting! I can play games with my wife on it or by myself... great system. Second best system purchase to date (after the SNES)

Obviously you haven't used the controller for long periods of time or with games that utilize it well. The controller is awesome and works great.

I got MK Wii about 2 weeks ago. Wii wheel works but is imprecise vs GC controller in my opinion.

These wii threads are getting too many today.

My 2 cents: Its hurting "hardcore" gamers because today's innovation is not Parasite Eve or Vagrant Story, its now Chocoboz.

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

hardcore game doesn't sell on Wii (Soriku, say anything you want, Tales sales just prove it again)..

so if anything, it only hurts hardcore gamers who ONLY have a Wii.

I am looking at what this year's game on my console, and I see

GTAIV
MGS4
Fallout 3
Resistent 2
Socom
SC4
GT5P
Condemed 2

and I say... Hardcore gamers are still good and well (for now)

Soriku (Feb 10/08): In 5 years the PS3/360 will be dead.

it's done nothing to hardcore gamers as the only hardcore game on the Wii are Nintendo games that would have been on that platform no matter its success anyway....

Hardcore gamers not into Nintendo games can pretty much ignore the Wii like they did the previous gen with the GC and get the game they like on their usual platforms..

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Play the following games with the Wiimote and Nunchuck:

Godfather Blackhand Edition

Metroid Prime 3

Mario Galaxy

No More Heroes

Mercury Meltdown Revolution

And then we can talk...

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

also as i recall wii has one of the most hardcore games, that being manhunt 2
