Forums - Sales - Predictions on Failing to Meet Expectations from E3

There are many a game to be demoed in the next week in LA at E3.

My question for discussion is what is going to be shown that is thought to be AAA but will end up selling like day-old
bread rather than hotcakes.

In other words, what big games are not going to be big sellers.

The reason I propose this discussion is I see a lot of similar games coming out and know that all of them can't move well in the marketplace. The same thing happens each year. (This is not a dig on any particular game, console, or developer).

For the PS3 -- I will say Little Big Planet because it is a differnt sort of game and those tend not to do well on any console, even if they are great (e.g. Okami).

For the Wii -- I will say Fatal Frame 4 because the series does not resonate as much with people compared to other survival horror franchises (e.g., Resident Evil) and because it has never before been on a Nintendo console (jumping from PS2/Xbox).

For the Xbox 360 -- I wills say Fable 2 because the original game under-delivered compared to the promises of its creator.

Please let the discussion ensue.

I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

all the games you mentioned will be big sellers

I agree with FFIV, unless nintendo gets to the advertising. The game is being released in japan in (I think 2 weeks). It should have been advertised to death now. They didn't even release a video gameplay, or pre rendered.

All the things you mentioned are pretty much known entities.

I want to be surprised with something I never expected.

For example, I never expected to see Wii Fit last year, especially not so close to completion. That came as a complete surprise to me.

You could be right about LBP. I see it as one of those games that'll either flop or really hit big and do beyond most expectations. Also I think it'll be a game that survives on word of mouth and legs.

Fable 2 I'm unsure, I guess it depends how many people felt snubbed by the last Fable and if the new features can make up for them with new people or getting those people back and then some.

The three games you named are all great choices, although I think you could substitute in Banjo-Kazooie for Fable and still be right.

@FishyJoe: if you mean in general, then X-Seed and Capcom are both supposed to have some sweet and unexpected games to unveil at E3. If you mean just by sales, then Allen Car's Easy Way to Stop Smoking or My Weight Loss Coach have a strong chance of footing the bill.

on fable 2 the original game didnt under deliver much it was actually IMO the best game on the original xbox

little big planet has done nothing but wow people, it definatly wont under deliver

although the wii one, sounds like an action game.....on the wii......crap but the wii controller sucks

@Davidc Fatal Frame is a horror game where you use a first person camera to kill ghosts. I would say the wii mote is perfect for it. Also the wiimote sucking is your opinion and in this type of game its a fact that the wiimote is more accurate.

I think LBP will sell just fine. Unlike Okami, it is being advertised. Heavily. It's already being included in ps3 TV adverts, and they have signs up in every GameStop saying, "The Best Games are on PlayStation 3," signs that show five games: GTAIV, MGS4, GT5P, Resistance 2, and LBP, with LBP being dead center. Sony has often mentioned it as being their big holiday release alongside Resistance, and it will be marketed as such.

Advertising alone should be able to push it past a million, as it should sell to the same crowd that bought Ratchet & Clank, if nothing else, but the fact that every person that's actually played the game seems to be in love with it leads me to believe that there will be strong word of mouth surrounding this title, much like Uncharted. Even if it starts off somewhat slow, word of mouth and user generated content will give it very long legs, imo.

As for a game I think won't sell so well: Viva Pinata 2.  The original only sold so well because it was bundled for a while, and Banjo will trump VP2 this holiday.

Though I suppose that wouldn't be considered a AAA title...
