Forums - Sony - PS3 Update 2.41 us up

Quick question:

Anyone who actually HAD problems with 2.40 orginally...did it "brick" your console? Because from what I understand (over at Kotaku) it basically ended some PS3s.......even though it would still turn on and could still be updated. (I thought bricked meant that the system was completely done)

Man....Kotaku is stupid, but I guess I have to toss the question out there

@Mike

I'm thinking more from a media perspective... its bad press. Doesnt look good. We all know the media blow stuff out of proportion.

Yes, it's a sad state of IMO especially the US media. Just like when a Sony repair employee refusing to repair an actor's PS3 because of being ridiculously dirty or a joke claim someone's home burned down due to the PS3. The more outrage and the less research done to look at things more objectively the better it seems...

IMO it's mostly a problem with the media though, there are hidden agendas, like claims of HD DVD crushing Blu-Ray, completely misinformed 360 vs PS3 hardware comparisons, no in depth research why a game port may end up into minor differences but hyped up beyond proportions, etc, etc...

To be fair, the 360 has had more than its fair share of negative sensationalist press...

Only Nintendo seems to be smear free at the moment... apart from the occasional Wii Fit story of crying 10 year old girls being told they are obese.  But I'm sure they will find something to hit Nintendo with soon.

The western media (mainly UK and US) is just so poor and ill informed, and they still see gaming as a pass time dominated by geeky masturbating teenage males.

I object to that kind of stereotype. I'm 22 not a teenager.

The important thing is that Sony responded pulling out the offending update and working diligently to isolate and correct the problems. This incident only proves that all complex machinery are prone to all sorts of "bugs". Microsoft responded accordingly with the guaranty update for the RRoD. For me the Sony response only solidifies my intention to purchase a PS3 coming December.

From what I understand it just corrupted data which is why a simple hard drive reformat was all that was needed to fix it. It depends what you mean by brick I suppose, it made the system unusable until the hard drive was reformatted but it wasn't a hardware problem like the 360's suffer so it wasn't permanent.

I didn't have problems with the 2.4 update but my friend can't turn his console on anymore. i told him it's probably just the hd, told him time to upgrade to a western digital 320gb like mine.

Just installed the update and had no problems (same as 2.40).

Ditto.

Not trying to be a fanboy. Of course, it's hard when you own the best console eve... dang it

Yeah, the fact that the 2.4 update bricked even one console is quite concerning though. We should at least be able to upgrade Sony's compulsory firmware updates without fear of our console bricking.

I hold off on all future upgrades until they have been fully tested from now on.

2.41 changed a few things and updated stability.

Look at the new platinum trophy.
