Nah, Thunder Force is more an horizontal shooter than a text book/vertical one like Xevious. You also have different weapons in Thunder Force and a non-linear stage selection (at least in the third game). Or yeah, you were probably talking about the first game...

Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...
^I can't recall if II had selectable stages (never really cared for it), but III and IV (a.k.a. Lightening Force) most assuredly did.
The original TF never saw the light of day outside of Japan, or even on a home console.

The first Thunderforce was a top down vertical one. Though it was never released outside japan.
