Nah, Thunder Force is more an horizontal shooter than a text book/vertical one like Xevious. You also have different weapons in Thunder Force and a non-linear stage selection (at least in the third game). Or yeah, you were probably talking about the first game...

P.S.: I can't believe I missed that rumor! @_@

The first Thunderforce was a top down vertical one. Though it was never released outside japan.
