Well, the Wii was their Last Stand in the consoles.

If it failed, Nintendo would give up because they have worsen in consoles sales over the years.

I don't quite get the DS arguments. The DS came out in 2004, two years before the PSP and the handheld wars. There was little to no risk because Ninty could've gone back to the drawing board completely and still made it out ok.

With the Wii, Ninty was coming off a pretty embarrassing third place finish in the previous generation and they were introducing something pretty new to the industry and attempting to make it a standard for their new platform. The Wii probably had higher R&D costs based off of what I believe to be common sense, but I don't have the numbers to back that up.

Edit: spelling

The DS at least in Japan come one week before the PSP not two years.

my main reason for believing the ds is bigger risk is, nintendo were profitable even though they lost 2 console wars, the handheld business was there saving grace.

^but i thought they also made profits on consoles

^ lets see profits from a consoles that's being dominated by ps1/ps2 or profits from market dominating handheld, i wonder which one is bigger

Wii/Mario Kart Wii Code:2793-0686-5434

^well the hand held market does make more, but if DS failed ninty would of still amde alot by wii,and they could of always make the next hand held use the name gameboy again, but with wii ninty might of still made profits from the hand held market(supposedly DS was a success like it is now)but they wouldnt make another console since their console sales would of jsut been dropping

^ ds was a test to see how consumers will like a new ways to play games, by the time the wii came out they already knew consumers would like new ways to play games thanks to the ds success, which makes ds the bigger risk.
