Forums - Sales - America sales up!!! Normal week?! what stands out?

I think the bigger picture then hardware sales is the software did anyone notice MGS4 dropped from the top 5 in the Americas? It only sold good enough for 10th place in the Americas. While in Japan and Others it is still in the top 5.

I still can't believe the PS3 sold so low. I think the truth is here in the Americas no one cares about the PS3. We'll see what next week brings with 80 GB bundles back in stock.

Go Nintendo! I guess.

The Wii has little chance of reaching a 60%-65% marketshare - that could only happen if Sony/MS actually pulled/stop selling their consoles - and that is very unlikely.

The Wii will also lose marketshare over Xmas (like last year), because it will be more supply constrained than either the 360 or PS3. But it will likely pick up share again early in the new year '09 (etc).

It seems to be possible at the rate the wii is going. It may come close to ps2 marketshare. I also think nintendo would've fixed their supply constraints by then.

If the PS2 has sold 120m units worldwide, and the XBOX/GC combined sold 65m-70m - it means the PS2 is edging on 60%-65% now. The XBOX & GC haven't been openly sold as "new" products for years - this is the only reason the PS2 is edging a 60% marketshare. When the generation was "decided", the PS2 marketshare would have been in the 50%-55% range.

If the 360 + PS3 end up selling 350k-400k (combined) worldwide - the Wii would need to average 650k-700k/week to get close to a 60% marketshare (and closer to 800k for a 65% marketshare) - assuming it has to "catch up" units as well.

700k/week is approx 3m/month, which is far beyond their manufacturing capacity at the moment.

Anything over a 55% marketshare (and sustained) would be pretty amazing.

Perhaps you're right. I've never been known for giving predictions. What was the PS2's marketshare as of, say xmas 2006? (already answered, I see)

Wii - 140, PS3 - 70, 360 -50 puts it only at 54%. You're certainly right as I think I may be a bit low on the PS360 there. Should have thought that one through a bit more, thanks for pointing it out.

Pristine, you are stating that not all people want games with goofy characters huh? I wander why almost all of the Wii's big guns are on their way to 6 mil. How many 360 and Ps3 games have made it?

360: 1
Ps3: None

Just cause a game has cartoon looking characters doesn't mean it won't have a lot of buyers. (which is why Ratchet and Clank series will always be one of my best vg series of all time.)

Its only natural that when clueless people like my mum walked into the store to buy the wii, she was told to buy SSBB and SMG when she asked for advise on games. People like her are really boosting the wii's sales. When nintendo's 1st party titles comprise over 90% of the good titles on the wii. With its hardware sales, its only natural that its 1st party software see 6 mil easily.

I never said people don't like cartoons I like cartoon characters. I just like REALISTIC character models. I love tales of the abyss (ps2). Its a cartoon  but it has REALISTIC character models not big head, small body and weird creatures. This is why FFIX ranks last in my list of FFs. I was just pointing out that people like me exist and did not wish to speak for everyone else. Hope this clarifies things.

For the record, I don't like ratchet and clank either but sony offers alternatives like uncharted while nintendo rarely ever does.

What about Zelda? Metroid? Fire Emblem? Eternal Darkness (second party release, same as Uncharted)? Even Disaster: Day of Crysis is being made by Nintendo and is far from cartoonie ... Nintendo does whore out Mario a bit much, but they do it because they have built a reputation over the years which allows people to trust games that have Mario in them; even the worst Mario games are bug free, polished and enjoyable to play.

One thing that people need to understand when they complain about the art style of a lot of Nintendo's games is that these characters were (often) born on the early arcade hardware, NES or SNES systems which the most attractive games were designed to look like cartoons; it is amazingly difficult to take a 16x16 sprite and make it look like something realistic. People still like Donkey Kong, Earthbound, Mario, Starfox, F-Zero, Metroid, and Kid Icarus and (while many can be translated into more realistic art styles) most are completely inappropriate to do in a realistic fashion.

I don't really have anything against nintendo, they just have nothing for me. I can't stand their character designs...grew out of them back in the snes era. Killer Instinct was my fav game on snes. I used to visit my friend everyday just to play it but then, nintendo sold rare and there's nothing left for me on their systems. Why can't they release games with realistic character models? Graphics aren't my problem as I'm currently playing a ps1 game.

For the record, I'm not trolling since this is a sales discussion not a nintendo forum.

Also, my little brother coaxed my mum into buying the wii because HE ENJOYED SWINGING THE NUNCHUK (hint:there are people like that).

Trolling has nothing to do with saying "bad" things about Nintendo - its about injecting posts into a thread that are off-topic, in an inflammatory fashion.

Saying you don't like "Nintendo's games" is one thing - but that is not a valid reason to bash a console (any console). There are plenty of games with "realistic graphics and characters" on the Wii.

And Rare? Banjo? Jet Set Gemini? Donkey Kong? Do these games have "realistic graphics"?

...

And whats wrong with "Enjoying swinging a nunchuck"? Do you think that is wierd behaviour or something? Have you ever seen or played WiiSports? The entire attraction of the game to most people revolves around the immension of using "motion" to control the game - i.e. "its fun".

...

Anyway - lets try to get back onto "sales", as this is a sales thread in the sales forum...

I only said I was sad nintendo sold rare because that spells the end of Killer Instinct.

I didn't say that enjoying swinging a nunchuk was bad, that would mean that I think my little brother is weird. I brought up the point because someone said that everybody buys the wii because it has the best games which is an extremely subjective point and I know my brother got on because of the nunchuk not necessarily the games.

I'm not bashing nintendo. I never said the wii was a crap system---that would be insulting to millions including my own family. I only said it was no for me.

It looks like you misunderstood my points. I didn't realize that they would be considered "trolling".

I live in the US. I care. Thats one person lol. When wii sales get a boost, its only natural that its software take the top spots because the people buying the system have to buy games as well.

Wow, much needless drama in this thread. I'll just sum up the weekly America + Euro sales with this picture:

End of 2008 totals: Wii 42m, 360 24m, PS3 18.5m (made Jan. 4, 2008)

Dam can you guys seriously chill?

All your posts have been " WII RULES", WII DOMINATES, " ALL HAIL WII"

Its getting very annoying.

What stands out? Mario Kart Wii sales are very low. This game is still sold out in many parts of the US:

I had the ps2 at 70% marketshare in my head but now that you elaborate, I see what 65% is all about. I think its the wii's lifespan that will most likely determine where it stands at the end of this gen. If it lasts as long as the ps2, it might make it but I doubt it because the system would be too outdated when HD becomes the norm. Also, if sony isn't full of it, the ps3 would be around to slow it down for a very long time as well.
