I think cutscenes are important to a degree for promoting some part of the game story or signaling a major event, but they should be kept short, like under a minute at longest.

I'm definitely more of a gameplay fan. A good story can be helpful, but I like racing games, shooters, and fighters, so story isn't a big deal to me. I would take Splinter Cell over MGS because you only have to worry about the mission at hand, and not other side stories.
There are only a couple of games where I was really into the story. Super Paper Mario is the main example. I hate the story line in the Trauma Center games. I don't think anyone buys that game to listen to doctors complain about their sad lives for hours. They buy it to do surgey. That storyline is completely unnecessary.
As for cutscenes, I do enjoy them in most cases. I really think that all cutscenes should have the ability to be skipped though. The games with the best cutscenes are survival horror games. I like them because the cutscenes are scarier than the game in a lot of cases. I also like how the cutscenes have a cinematic quality that you just can't achieve while playing the game.

Ever played Lost Odyssey? That is a good example of a traditional RPG being fun. The story is nothing special but the characters are interesting, especially Kaim and the subplots are pretty engaging and mature. There is also the dreams which are very well written, coming from an award-winning novelist

Nope, never played that one so I cannot judge, if it was unclear I only meant those that I have tried. But then again, I've tried many that had accaimed stories and found them an utter joke.

doesnt it also have a good story
I remember Contra cutscenes (the J-version), i got to play it thanks to the asian community in my country, since then i love cutscenes in every game that tells a story...
I care about story in games that have one - cutscenes are jut one way of telling a story and I judge them the same way : are they good and effectively telling the story?
Obviously if I'm just playing some MP shooter online or something like HD Super stardust then story is moot.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
