Sakaguchi posted a blog in 2 different parts, summing up what the next wave of projects will include:
I created this website myself with commercially-available tools. My first attempt. It's surprisingly difficult. Maybe it's what to post about, or maybe it's an issue with copyright. How much of my thoughts should I reveal....? I'm a bit behind the times in figuring out that here, too, is a different place than games in which to post things. They say "simple is best," so I opted to keep things sparse for now. But I'll make it a point to update, and add more and more substance. I'm thinking maybe things like the games themselves, discussions and ideas relating to our works.
We've completed several projects, and Mistwalker's first wave has passed. Even as we reflect on our many experiences, we embark on our next journey. There are many things to accomplish.
・New ideas
・Combining the scenario and game system
・Real time
・Ideas that are emotionally moving
Which to me, sounds like Cry On, as it's supposed to be "Emotionally moving", and real time.
However, Sakaguchi also posted this:
We're doing research & development from a prototype that I haven't worked on since FF7. We're finished with that for now. There were a lot of trials and errors, and it took longer than expected, but it was an unexpectedly good challenge. I'm reminded again of how "it pays when things are working," so taking advantage of what a prototype offers, there were many trials and ideas that didn't seem to work out, but I think we made a new feeling and experience. From here on out is a phase in which we take steps towards our next product. The scenario is still just a rough plot. We brainstorm, rethink, and exchange ideas every day. Anyway, the whole team is moving towards those "new ideas." Our struggling efforts may reach us even higher than our first wave, and take us to the next level. So, that's what we hope for !
So with this, I doubt it's Cry On, as it's already well into production, and this game looks like they're just building the prototype, and brainstorming ideas for this new game with an old idea.
It could be interesting: many people don't like what happened with Square after FFVII, so this idea, if it does wind up at market, could give us a fresh infusion of 16-bit ideas and gameplay, with modern bonuses (or, could be a DS game?)
At any rate, whatever it is, I hope that Microsoft reaches a deal to get the game, and allows Sakaguchi to reach his full potential with the game. Since it seems to be a totally different idea, chances are, it could be something unique, and awesome (like Chrono Trigger was)
Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
