Forums - Sales - DS is no competition for PSP, says Sony

This makes me wonder...
will the situation with DS/PSP be the situation with Wii/PS360 2 years from now? I really hope not :(
DS has taken almost all of PSP's 3rd party support. I hope that doesn't happen to 360 and PS3. Do you think it will?

It's a good thing there is no competition for the PSP then, cause it would probably get owned by an average portable Nintendo console, much less the most popular one of all time.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Not really, the wii will take alot of 3rd party support, but there still will be alot left on the ps360.

^^I doubt it--they have enough cash to buy games if they need to, and some extremely stubborn third-parties are refusing to develop for Wii.

But, yes, by and large the tide will change.

OT:

The quote in the OP is a bunch of bull-crap. When the DS and the PSP were in the 'hyping' stage before release, Sony was the undisputed king of the gaming industry. Their current console outsold the competitors 5-1 at the time, and they could do no wrong (or so it seemed). Nintendo only had one 'bastion' of the gaming world that they were still dominant in--handheld gaming.

The PSP would change that. It was the system for 'hardcore' gamers. It was a portable PS2. You'll find no pokeymans here. So what if they have a one-year lead? They are DONE! Hey, maybe we'll give them a break and pick them up, they can make some nice games for the PSP.

So, of course, now that they're getting their ass kicked, they're not competing.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

grafix - sound - functionality - games are all better on psp, ds is no match in any way what soever. what the ds does have is, a very high purchase rate amoungst family/child type gamers, and will sell lots and lots in years to come.

Well, the DS has that, and a plethora of fantastic Nintendo 1st party and JRPG games.

What it comes down to is this. You're a PSP fanboy. When you actually hear someone flaming the DS, they are always a PSP fanboy. When you hear someone flaming the PSP, it's probably just some dude who actually bought a PSP and either put it in a drawer or sold if after they realized all those metacritic talking points ended up being different versions of Madden, ports, and crust old "lite" versions of PS2 franchises.

If you actually wanna play games, the DS has no competition. Sony is right about that.

he is right on some accounts for sure

Nintendo says they aren't competing with everyone else because they're on the path of disruption.

Sony says it's not competing when it's convenient for them. Phil Harrison made those comments because he was underestimating the DS and thought the PSP would trounce it handily.

Another tidbit of Phil's: "with the DS, it's fair to say that Nintendo stepped out of the technical race and went for a feature differentiation with the touch screen, but I fear that it won't have a lasting impact beyond that of a gimmick - so the long-lasting appeal of the platform is at peril as a direct result of that."

Of course, as Nintendo and the DS decisively handed Sony and the PSP their collective asses, they're in different markets. It's the same thing with Wii vs. PS360.

I fell out of my chair laughing on that bolded part XD. but yeah, you're pretty much right.

I like the strategy here. Since Sony built their machines with all kinds of Multimedia features they can change arguments as they see fit. If they are winning they can say we've got the best gaming machine that happens to have all these other features and that's why we are winning. When they are losing they can say well we were thinking about the future of consoles/portables not just as gaming machines but multimedia systems as well... as thus we really built a multimedia system that just happens to play games so clearly we're not in the same market as the other guys. So it's a win/win for them either way it goes.

Boycotting the following:

1. Yoshi: He ate my car and spit out a toaster.

2. Igglybuff: Totally false advertisement. You can have as many as you like they don't buff nothing.

3. the Terms Hardcore/Softcore... We're talking Video Games. Not Porn.

4. The term Casual as relates to Gamers: We make them sound like outsider's that happen to play games.  If that were the case they'd own a PS3.

5. Donuts.... Beacause I drink Beer...... and the biggest fan of Donuts hates Beer.

6. Boycotts: Their so lame.
