Funny.

Sony has to choices here.

PSP as gaming machine - it gets beaten by Nintendo and DS badly

PSP as media player - it gets utterly abused by Apple and the iPod. Not even funny.

So Sony, which do you want to be? A good second place finish or a laughingstock? Your choice.

Seriously, Nintendo and Apple are laughing at Sony.

Sony is like that sad dude who thinks he gots it going on in public ,but goes home crying, curled up in the fetal position.(when it comes to handhelds)

You know , its actually funny that you are talking again without knowing no straight facts :

The Ipod managed to sell l~ 11 million units in 3 years , while the PSP passed the 30 million mark . So where are you actually getting your numbers from ? I see that Sony actually managed to sell 6 times as many PSPs as Apple managed to sell Ipods . (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Ipod_sales_2008_Q1.svg )

And as a gaming device , like it or not it is the first one that ever managed to get a significant market % from Nintendo , even now heaving almost 1/3 of the entire market ...

So yeas , the PSP went on a different rute , managing to somehow have a different market than the core market of the DS or Ipod , and thats how they managed to ship over 36 million units to date .

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

Please learn how to read statistical data correctly.

The Ipod sold 11 million LAST QUARTER ALONE. The quarter before that, it sold 24 million IN ONE QUARTER.

It has to this date sold a minimum of 150 million units, just by roughly adding up the data that is per quarter.

so.....

35 million vs. 150 million? or 35 million vs. 66 million?

You decide.

Faxanadu is right on the money.

According to that chart, since the first quarter of 2007 up until now (Q2 of 2008) the ipod has sold over 84 million units. That handily beats the PSP. Over 150 million ipod units sold since launch.

Yes , I know that lately the Ipod has seen amazing sales . But look at how it all started . Why couldent the PSP experience similar sales explosion ( I doubt it would , but it could reach impressive numbers if they do something similar to the Itunes store and get their act together ) . I dont know if you remember , but back in 01 when the Ipod was announced , and even afther its launch many have cleraly stated that it could become a failure to Apple . True , now it holds in the US ~75% of all mp3 players market , but this wasnt allways like this ;)

Also , saying 35 vs. 150 is not correct neither , mainly because the Ipod had exactly 2x as much time on the market thanthe PSP ;)

Nothing wrong with the PSP hardware or sales - and it definitely IS in competition with the DS. The difference is that it is also the best media player on the market (until the iPods take over) - this is something the DS just doesn't do.

The issue with the PSP is software sales, and this makes it hard for much of the industry to "take it seriously" - its great for Sony though.

Pity being "the best on the market" is meaningless to most consumers. "The most user-friendly on the market", on the other hand, does wonders for a product's sales. And it's hard to deny that the PSP falls short in that regard in all of its functions. It looks and feels like exactly what it is: an amalgamation of several different products, with more concern on giving as many options as possible than in giving the most accessible experience possible for what features it has.

According to Ubisoft:

Cowen & Co. analyst Doug Creutz notes that Ubisoft was also on top of the casual gaming trend before everyone else--besides Nintendo (other-otc: NTDOY.PK - news - people )--and tapped into the teen girl market for the DS handheld console.

Tony Key, Ubisoft's senior vice president of sales and markerting, says girls under 15 control 50% of DS sales worldwide, but no one was catering to them. In 2007, Ubisoft developed the "Imagine" line, which lets girls play out their figure skating or fashion designing dreams, and "Petz," which allows girls (and boys) to raise virtual dogs or horses. Casual games accounted for 25% of Ubisoft revenues in fiscal 2008, up from 10% in 2007.

The company is busy creating even more content that speaks to teenage girls' interests. Key wouldn't reveal results of Ubisoft's research on the topic, but he hinted at social networking.

DO you know how much imagine babiez sold? 1 million units. That is 1/74th of the ds' user base. Yep 50% right there.

This reminds me of the Black Knight from Monty Python's Holy Grail. "Get back here! I'll bite your kneecaps off! I'm not dead yet, it's just a flesh wound!"
