Nothing wrong with the PSP hardware or sales - and it definitely IS in competition with the DS. The difference is that it is also the best media player on the market (until the iPods take over) - this is something the DS just doesn't do.
The issue with the PSP is software sales, and this makes it hard for much of the industry to "take it seriously" - its great for Sony though.
