Forums - Sony - Most Influential Sony Games

Which Sony-developed games do you feel are the most influential in gaming? I think the top 3 choices are clear, but feel free to criticize:

1) Parappa tha Rappa: as far as I know this is one of if not the first rhythm game available. To this day, this game still has the best reviews of any Sony game ever made.

2) Shadow of the Colossus: my favorite game of last generation, on any console. Creative, artistically beautiful, one of the few games I can show a non-gamer and impress them. It's gorgeous. I actually believe it will remain the most visually arresting game until Team Ico outdoes themselves.

3) Everquest: obviously not known for its Playstation incarnations, but still developed by Sony and still highly influential. MMORPGs existed long before this, but I doubt anyone here remembers any of the MUDs available before EQ put the genre on the map.

I completely agree with your list but i'd switch 2 and 3 around even though i liked SotC better than everquest i don't think sales reflect that feeling.

I think yours reflect the market very well but heres my personal top 3 anyway:

1.ICO - Same reasons as your put for Shadow of the Colussus but this was a necessary step along the way to get there and had the same feeling of scale and beauty that was just amazing.

2.The Legend of Dragoon - Nothing overly new brought along with this game but took top aspect of RPGs and fused them together very well. Intense/enthrolling story telling, amazing character development, clever and fun battle system, well rounded battles/level up system. Just took RPGs up a notch for me personally.

3.Twisted Metal - When i was in elementary school one of my best friends had a little game i like to call Rock n' Roll Racing and until I played Twisted Metal II nothing came close to comparing. Car destruction games are pretty generic I found and the only 2 that have ever stood out to me were Twisted Metal and Rock n' Roll Racing. Twisted Metal somehow figured out how to add an interesting story and character development aspect into a genre that it doesnt really seem to fit in and make it work very well.

Thats what Sony has done that has appealed the most to me personally, but like I said i really think your 3 are spot on if you swap SotC and Everquest spots.

What of God of War?

One note Slayer of God: Twisted Metal was only published by Sony, not developed. The developer is SingleTrac, now known as Incognito Studios (technically different incorporations, but almost entirely the same people). They are now working on Warhawk. It's possible that Sony owns the IP for Twisted Metal, I'm not sure: in any case, you can view this as splitting hairs if you'd like, but technically, Sony didn't make this game :p

I actually did some programming work for a MUD, so I remember them quite well. :)

Everquest definitely gave birth to the MMORPG genre, for better or worse.

@ Bodhesatva
sorry i wasn't 100% sure. I tried to find a list of Sony Developed games really quickly to double check, but didnt see one. All i found was a list of Sony owned franchises so i took a chance.

1. MGS1,2,3 I never get as pumped playing any game as I do when I'm working my way through one of these titles, trying to remain COMPLETELY undetected... it's just cool, and really gave way to the genre.
2. FFVII, I know it's cheesy but I had never had ANY interest in JRPGs b4 that(or any rpgs at all) and just recently I pumped 242 hours(no type-o) into FFXII and now I'm churning through Oblivion still.
3. I just now realized that I read your thread wrong.... Sony developed games, shit I typed out 1 and 2 using my controller and I'm not about to erase them....let's try again...

1. I'll go with Shadow of the Collossus here for the same reasons, along with Ico, I wouldn't be able to choose between these.
2. Everquest definitely broadened the scope and appeal of that genre(one I still have not tried, but who knows with The Agency on the horizon)
3. Super Rub-Dub, never before have I seen the rubber duck genre presented with such innovation and true vision.

Gran Turismo 1 was the first super simulation racer on home consoles. Plus it's quite a feat for an original IP to be the second bestselling game of the 5th gen, with ONLY Mario 64 topping it.

SOCOM 1 was almost as much of a killer app for Sony's online as Halo 2 was for XBL, and showed that a charge service may be the best, but it isn't vital.

Everybody's Golf series showed that Nintendo doesn't have a monopoly on cute sports games, that are more about action than simulation.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

this list makes no sense.

GT, after it came out every dev including square LOL tied to do a race sim.

GOW, how a action game should be done.
