Gran Turismo 1 was the first super simulation racer on home consoles. Plus it's quite a feat for an original IP to be the second bestselling game of the 5th gen, with ONLY Mario 64 topping it.
SOCOM 1 was almost as much of a killer app for Sony's online as Halo 2 was for XBL, and showed that a charge service may be the best, but it isn't vital.
Everybody's Golf series showed that Nintendo doesn't have a monopoly on cute sports games, that are more about action than simulation.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
